VB Opens MPSF Play Friday at #4 UCI

The Bruins open MPSF play on Friday at UCI and on Saturday at UCSD.

This Week — The second-ranked UCLA men's volleyball team (3-0, 0-0) opens up the 2016 MPSF schedule at 4th-ranked UC Irvine (1-1) on Friday at 7 p.m. On Saturday, UCLA will square off with UCSD (1-1) in San Diego at 7 p.m.

Scouting the Opponents — UC Irvine (1-1) opened the season with a straight set win over George Mason (25-21, 25-16, 25-18) in the AVCA Showcase event at BYU. UCI then dropped a five-setter to Loyola-Chicago in the same event (25-21, 25-19, 22-25, 26-28, 15-9). The Bruins lost all three matchups with the Anteaters last season (0-3 at UCI, 1-3 at UCLA, 0-3 at UCI in MPSF Playoffs).
UC San Diego (1-1) opened the season with a sweep of Charleston (25-18, 25-19, 25-12). Grand Canyon then dealt the Tritons a 0-3 setback (26-24, 26-24, 25-12). UCSD opens MPSF play by hosting UC Santa Barbara on Friday before meeting the Bruins. Last season, UCLA defeated the Tritons in both meetings (3-0 at UCSD, 3-0 at UCLA).
Recapping  — The Bruins defeated three ranked opponents on a season-opening east coast road swing. UCLA, hit .366 as a team and opened with a 3-0 sweep at then #14 George Mason (25-23, 25-12, 25-20). JT Hatch led the effort with 11 kills. A balanced attack was the key in a 3-1 win (24-26, 25-22, 25-22, 25-22) over then #6 Ohio State in a match played at Penn State. Dylan Missry (12), Micah Ma'a (11), Michael Fisher (11) and Mitch Stahl (10) each totaled double-digits in kills. The Bruins capped off the week with a five-set victory at Penn State (25-23, 22-25, 25-18, 21-25, 15-8).  Jake Arnitz' 13 kills led the way. Stahl  added 12 kills and seven block assists and Ma'a had 10 kills and three aces. Hagen Smith recorded 10 digs, eight block assists and six kills.
The Bruins hit an MPSF high of .538 in the win at George Mason. UCLA also registered a MPSF single-match best of 16.5 blocks in the win at Penn State. Stahl hit .619 for the week with 17 blocks (1.42) and was named AVCA National Player of the Week and MPSF Player of the Week. Micah Ma'a was selected Off the Block/Springbak, Inc. Co-Freshman of the Week.
