The second-ranked Bruins swept past UC San Diego in three straight sets on Saturday night in an MPSF match played in La Jolla, Calif. Scores of the contest were 25-18, 25-17, 25-14. UCLA is now 5-0, 2-0 on the season. It is the first time UCLA has opened a season with five straight wins since the 2005 squad began the year with seven victories.

Sophomore JT Hatch topped the team with 12 kills. Freshman Dylan Missry added nine kills while hitting .500. Freshman Micah Ma'a hit .455 on seven kills and totaled six aces, eight digs and 23 set assists. The Bruins had 11 aces on the night to 0 for the Tritons. UCLA outhit their hosts .407 to .169 in the match.

In the first set, UCLA took a 12-9 lead after an ace from Hatch. A kill by Hagen Smith made it 14-11 Bruins. Missry served up another ace for a 17-12 advantage. Mitch Stahl's kill pushed the margin to 22-17 and the Bruins went on to take home a 25-18 win.

UCLA scored six of the first nine points to begin set two. The Bruins led 10-6 after a Missry kill. After enjoying a 12-8 lead, UCLA tallied the next five points, two on kills by Hatch, to move ahead 17-8. A Stahl kill ended the set at 25-17.

The Bruins jumped to a 6-1 lead in set three. Ma'a then took over with a kill for a 10-4 edge, an ace to make it 14-7 and another kill for a 20-13 difference. Jake Reeves' kill ended the match with UCLA owning a 25-14 win.

Next up for the Bruins is a date at Cal Baptist on Wednesday at 7 p.m. The first home match of the season comes up on Saturday against USC at 3 p.m. in Pauley Pavilion.
