Billings Named UCLA Athlete of Week

Women's Basketball

Monique Billings led women's basketball to a Bay Area home sweep.

UCLA/Muscle Milk

Sophomore forward Monique Billings (Corona, Calif.) of the UCLA women's basketball team was named the UCLA/Muscle Milk Student-Athlete of the Week for Jan. 18-24.

Billings led UCLA in scoring in both of the team's lopsided wins over the Bay Area teams this week, UCLA's first home sweep of the Bay Area teams since 2006. On Friday, UCLA snapped an eight-game losing streak to California with a dominant 75-56 win in Pauley Pavilion. Billings had 14 points and nine rebounds to go with two blocks against the Golden Bears. On Sunday night, Billings had 12 points and seven rebounds as UCLA snapped a 21-game losing streak to Stanford with a dominant defensive effort in a 56-36 home victory. It is the fewest points a Stanford team has ever scored against UCLA and the Bruins outscored Stanford 16-4 in the second quarter, also the fewest points allowed (UCLA) and scored (Stanford) in any quarter this season. Billings averaged 13.0 points and 9.0 rebounds per game on the week. She also averaged 1.5 blocks, 1.0 assists and 1.0 steals per game in the two wins while shooting 68.8 percent from field (11-for-16).

This is Billings' first UCLA/Muscle Milk Student-Athlete of the Week honor of the season and of her career.

Also nominated: Carlee Kapana, W. Water Polo; Oliver Martin, M. Volleyball; Katelyn Ohashi, Gymnastics; Thomas Welsh, M. Basketball.
