Team USA Defeats Bruins in Scrimmage

Women's Water Polo

Team USA, which has seven Bruins, beat UCLA in a scrimmage, 13-4.

Los Angeles, Calif. - The 2016 Bruins scrimmaged against a Bruin-filled U.S. Women's National Team on Saturday afternoon at Sunset Recreation Center, losing to the defending World and Olympic champions, 13-4.

UCLA goals were scored by Devin Grab, Grace Reego, Kelsey O'Brien and Mackenzie Barr. Team USA was led by Maggie Steffens and Makenzie Fischer, who each had hat tricks, and UCLA alumna Courtney Mathewson, who scored two goals.

Team USA, which is coached by former UCLA men's and women's water polo coach Adam Krikorian, has seven Bruins on the roster (three alumnae, three redshirts and one future Bruin), including three starters in Mathewson, Rachel Fattal and Sami Hill.

The first three goals of the game were scored by Bruins. Grab opened scoring at the 7:01 mark for UCLA, followed by goals from Fattal and Mathewson, which started a 6-0 scoring run for the U.S. team that culminated with a goal for future Bruin Maddie Musselman. Reego scored for the Bruins at 2:40 the second quarter, but Mathewson scored another goal to extend the National Team's lead to 7-2.

UCLA got on the board first to start the second half, as O'Brien scored on reserve goalkeeper Ashleigh Johnson to make the score 8-3 USA. Barr made it 9-4 with 5:29 to play in the third with her goal, but Team USA closed the game with four unanswered goals.

Bruin goalkeepers Alex Musselman and Carlee Kapana recorded three saves apiece, with each saving one penalty. Hill had seven saves in one half for Team USA, while Johnson had two saves.

"We knew it was going to be a great test; these girls are the best in the world," said UCLA head coach Brandon Brooks. "It's about us trying to get better right now. They're trying to get better and qualify for the Olympics, and we're trying to get better every day."

UCLA resumes intercollegiate play on Saturday, Feb. 13 at the Triton Invitational in San Diego.
