The fifth-ranked men's volleyball team swept the University of British Columbia in an exhibition match played Sunday night in Pauley Pavilion. Scores of the contest were 25-19, 25-15, 25-14. UCLA also captured a fourth set by a 25-15 count.

Junior middle blocker Mitch Stahl led the way for the Bruins with 11 kills and a .846 hitting percentage. He added a couple of service aces and a block solo. JT Hatch and Micah Ma'a added five kills each while hitting .429 and .625, respectively. Ma'a added four digs and 15 set assists. Hagen Smith totaled 17 set assists and four digs. Michael Fisher also had five kills and an ace. John Zappia hit .500 with three kills.

Dylan Missry and Christian Hessenauer came off the bench to supply six kills each. Jake Arnitz registered five kills and hit 1.000. Davis Gillett led UCLA with seven digs.

The Bruins hit .518 for the four sets and over .600 in sets one and three. UBC managed to hit .074 for the contest. UCLA had six aces and 5.5 team blocks for the match.

Coach John Speraw's team will open the regular season on Tuesday in Fairfax, Va. against #14 George Mason before heading to play Thursday (Ohio State) and Friday (Penn State) in the Penn State Tournament.

George Mason was picked to finish the 2016 season second in the Eastern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association (EIVA), according to the preseason poll. Mason received two first-place votes for a total of 58 points, only four points short of 17-time defending champion No. 10 Penn State, which was awarded the remaining six first-place votes and topped the poll.

Sixth-ranked Ohio State finished one point shy of the top spot in the 2016 Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association (MIVA) Preseason Poll. The Buckeyes came in at second with 73 points, a lone tally back from the defending national champion Loyola and the Ramblers' 74 points (five first-place votes). Last season's league champion, Lewis, received the other first-place vote and is predicted to finish third in 2016.
