LOS ANGELES, Calif. – The No. 19 UCLA swimming and diving teams host crosstown rival No. 7 Southern California in the last home meet of the season on Friday afternoon. Action begins with diving at 1 p.m., followed by swimming at 2 p.m.
The Bruins (6-3, 3-2) are looking to rebound from a pair of losses to the Bay Area teams back in January. UCLA fell to second-ranked Stanford at home in the Bruins' Breast Cancer Awareness Meet on Jan. 29, before losing to third-ranked California on Jan. 30.
Freshman Emma Schanz had a standout weekend against both teams, sweeping the 200 Breaststroke. Against Stanford, Schanz posted an NCAA B qualifying time of 2:13.03, edging the Cardinal's Ella Eastin by .31 seconds. Schanz then swam a 2:14.31 against Cal to win the event by more than two seconds.
On the boards, freshman Eloise Belanger won both springboard events against Stanford, posting a season-best 322.73 in the 3-meter and a new meet record of 295.35 in the 1-meter. The previous record of 292.58 was set by Stanford's Kassidy Cook last year when the Cardinal hosted the Bruins in Palo Alto. Against Cal, Belanger broke another meet record in the 1-meter event. The freshman dethroned former Bruin Emma Ivory-Ganja. Bélanger's 302.40 bested the previous record of 287.40—set by Ivory-Ganja at Cal in 2013—by 15 points.
Five swimmers and divers—Madison Applegate, Shannon Cheung, Katie Kinnear, Montana Monahan, and Arlyn Upshaw—will close out their collegiate home careers on Friday. The meet will be televised on Pac-12 Networks, with coverage beginning at 2 p.m.
