IRVINE, Calif. – The second-ranked UCLA women's water polo team heads back to Irvine this weekend to compete in the UC Irvine Invitational. The tournament will take place Saturday and Sunday at the Anteaters Aquatics Complex and at the Marian Bergeson Aquatic Center at Corona del Mar High School.
The stacked 16-team field features: Arizona State (T7), California (No. 3), Cal State Northridge (T25), Hawai'I (No. 6), Loyola Marymount (No. 14), Michigan (T7), Pacific (No. 12), San Diego State (No. 19), San Jose State (No. 11), Stanford (No. 4), UC Davis (No. 5), UC Irvine (No. 9), UC San Diego (No. 13), UC Santa Barbara (No. 17), UCLA (No. 2) , and USC (No. 1).
The Bruins (8-1) are fresh off an 11-6 win over ninth-ranked UC Irvine. Presenting a well-balanced attack, six different players scored for UCLA in last Friday's tilt. Alex Musselman and Carlee Kapana split time in the cage. The veteran goalkeeper stopped eight shots in the first half, while the newcomer tallied four saves in the second.
Mackenzie Barr leads the squad in scoring with 16 goals, followed by India Forster (13), Devin Grab (12), Charlotte Pratt (10), and Alexa Tielmann (10). The Bruins have netted 96 goals in nine games, averaging 10.67 goals per game. Defensively, UCLA has kept scoring to a minimum, holding opponents to an average of 5.22 goals per game. Together, Musselman and Kapana have amassed 85 saves—28 from the former, 57 from the latter.
UCLA squares off with No. 19 San Diego State at 8 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 27. The Bruins then face either No. 7 Michigan or No. 11 San Jose State at 1:30 p.m. or 2:45 p.m. Both games will be played at Corona del Mar High School.
