This Weekend — The top-ranked UCLA men's volleyball team (10-0, 6-0) plays on Friday and Saturday nights at No. 5-ranked  University of Hawai'i (8-1, 3-1). Both matches will start at 9 p.m. PT. The Bruins next home match is Feb. 11 vs. UC Irvine.

In The Rankings — The Bruins are No. 1 in the AVCA national rankings for the third straight week and the first time since being ranked first in two AVCA polls during the 2014 season. The Bruins were last sitting atop the AVCA poll in weeks #4 and #5 of the 2014 season after beginning that year by winning nine of the first 10 matches. UH is ranked fifth this week.
Scouting the Opponent — UH has captured the last four meetings with the Bruins, including two wins last season in Pauley (3-2; 3-0) when the Warriors were ranked No. 1.UH is 7-0 overall in home matches this season and has won their last 16 straight home contests.Hawai'i has opened this season with MPSF wins over Pepperdine (3-1) and sweeps of UC San Diego. However, the Waves defeated UH, 3-0,in their first match of the season in Malibu. Hawai'i also owns straight-set wins over No. 13 Lewis and Harvard. 
Recapping  — UCLA posted its 10th straight win to open the season last Friday in a 3-1 (20-25, 25-23, 27-25, 25-19) decision over CSUN. Soph Jake Arnitz hammered out a career-best 21 kills (23.5 points) on the night to lead the Bruins to victory. Freshman Micah Ma'a added a career-best seven aces and added 23 set assists (team hit .336) and four block assists. Hagen Smith led the Bruins with nine digs and added eight kills while hitting .889. Mitch Stahl finished with five kills and four block assists. Oliver Martin totaled five kills and five block assists. Michael Fisher came off the bench for four kills, five digs and three block assists. UCLA was out aced (9-8) for only the second time this season by the Matadors.
Last Wednesday, Ma'a floated a serve to an opening in the 49'ers defense to terminate the match with an ace. He finished with a career-high 13 kills, including several crucial points, on the night. Arnitz blasted 17 kills at a .429 hitting percentage and added a career-best 13 digs. Stahl finished with eight kills and five block assists. Hatch had nine kills, a pair of aces and a career-best 12 digs. Hagen Smith set 25 balls and added 11 digs, a career-high nine kills and a block solo. The Bruins hit .242 for the match to .219 for Long Beach and UCLA won the battle of the block 8.5 to 5.5.
Last Monday, UCLA opened the week with a 3-0 win over Princeton (25-19, 25-23, 25-16). Dylan Missry topped UCLA with 10 kills. John Zappia recorded a career-best 5 block assists and hit .700 with seven kills.
This is the first time the team has started a season 10-0 since the 1998 Bruins began with wins in their first 16 matches. As far as conference streaks go, the Bruins started 6-0 in league play in the 2014 season, 7-0 in 2012 and 10-0 in 1998. UCLA, under the direction of coach Al Scates, owns the only three unbeaten seasons in the history of the men's game (1984: 38-0; 1982: 29-0; 1979: 30-0).

Coach Speraw: Year Four at UCLA — John Speraw (UCLA '95), who is in his fourth season as the head coach at his alma mater, has captured three NCAA titles as a head coach (2012, 2009, 2007 at UCI), three as an assistant coach (1996, 1998, 2000 at UCLA) and two as a player (1993, 1995 at UCLA). Also the head coach of the U.S. Men's National Volleyball Team, Speraw led that squad to the 2015 FIVB World Cup and automatic qualification for the 2016 Olympic Games. Speraw came back to UCLA after 10 seasons at UC Irvine where he led the Anteaters to three NCAA championships, and a 199-106 (.646) overall record. In winning that 2007 title, Speraw became the only individual to produce a championship as a head coach, assistant coach and player in collegiate men's volleyball history. On Mar. 25, 2013, he was named head coach of the U.S. Men's National Team for the next quadrennial ending at the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janiero. In the summer of 2014, he guided the U.S. team to a win over top-ranked Brazil in the FIVB World League gold-medal match. In the summer of 2012, he had served as an assistant coach for the National Team, which advanced to the quarterfinals of the London Olympics. Speraw won the National Coach of the Year award in 2007.
