The top-ranked men's volleyball team snapped Hawaii's 17-match home court win streak with a five-set win in an MPSF match played on Saturday night. Scores were 22-25, 25-22, 19-25, 25-18 and 15-9. UCLA upped its records to 11-1 and 7-1 and Hawai'I is now 9-2 and 4-2 on the year. The Bruins rebounded from a poor first set hitting mark to outhit the Warriors .374 to .208 for the match. UCLA also won the battle at the net, besting UH 19.5 to 4.0 in total blocks.
In set one, UH came out strong and took a 1-4 lead. UCLA regrouped to even the set at 8-all after a block by Dylan Missry and Mitch Stahl. However, the Warriors scored seven of the next 8 points to take control. The Bruins battled back to close to 12-15 on a kill by Jake Arnitz. UCLA rallied to within one at 17-18 following a kill by Oliver Martin, at 19-20 after a Hagen Smith-Stahl block and to 22-23 on a block by Martin and Stahl, but could not obtain the lead. Hawai'i tallied the final two points to win the set 22-25. The Bruins, who hit just .097, were led by four kills by Arnitz and four block assists by Martin.
UCLA stormed out to a 6-3 edge in set two. The home team rallied to tie the set at 8-all. UCLA moved back in front 15-12 after kills by Martin, an attack error and a Missry kill. A couple of late kills by Missry fought off a Warrior rally and left UCLA in front 24-22. The Bruins captured the set after a block by Micah Ma'a, Arnitz and Stahl. UCLA hit .400 for the set.
In set three, UCLA tied the score at 4-all after an ace by Ma'a. The Bruins led 11-8 following an Arnitz kill. Hawai'i rallied to tie the score at 12 and went in front 12-14 after tallying four straight points. UCLA never regained the lead, but managed to fight off three set points before falling 19-25. Both teams hit over .380 in the set.
UCLA moved to a 7-4 lead to begin set four and led 11-8 after a kill by Stahl. UH came back to level the score at 11-all. Three straight Bruin points lifted the visitors into a 16-13 edge. UCLA increased its lead to 19-14 after an Arnitz kill and 24-17 following a Hatch hit. Set point came on a service error in a 25-18 win. UCLA hit .556 for the set.
In the deciding set, UCLA built a 5-1 lead after an Arnitz kill, an Arnitz-Martin block and an ace by Stahl. A Ma'a kill made it 6-2 and UCLA led 8-3 following a swing by Hatch. Hawai'i registered the next three points to close to 8-6. UCLA answered on kills by Hatch and an ace by Jackson Bantle for a 10-6 advantage. The Bruins extended the lead to 12-7 on an Arnitz kill and went up 13-7 after a UH attack error. A Stahl kill made it 14-8 and Ma'a delivered the set and match point on his career-best 18th kill of the night. The Bruin tallied a .636 hitting percentage for the set.
Arnitz finished with 13 kills and a career-best 8 block assists. Stahl matched his career-best with nine block assists and two block solos. Smith had 30 set assists and seven kills. Martin totaled five kills, six block assists and a solo block.
UCLA will return home and host UC Irvine on Thursday night in Pauley Pavilion at 7 p.m. Tickets will be available at the door.
