No. 9 UCLA Faces Top-Ranked Virginia

Both teams are 23-1 in dual-match singles heading into Tuesday's match

LOS ANGELES, Calif. – The ninth-ranked UCLA men's tennis team heads to Charlottesville, Va., to take on the top-ranked Virginia Cavaliers on Tuesday.  The match takes place at 3 p.m. PT at the Boyd Tinsley Courts at the Boar's Head Sports Club. 

The Bruins (5-0) have started their spring season on a hot streak, which includes wins over top-16 teams Georgia and San Diego.  UCLA routed then sixth-ranked Georgia, 6-1, at the Pac-12/SEC Challenge back in January.  Last time out, the Bruins blanked No. 16 USD, 7-0. 

UCLA is 23-1 in singles matches in duals this season.  Senior Karue Sell leads the squad with a 5-0 record in singles play, while junior Joseph Di Giulio boasts a 4-0 mark.  Junior Gage Brymer has made an impact at Nos. 2 and 3, compiling a 4-1 record.  Last week's Pac-12 Men's Tennis Player of the Week Mackenzie McDonald is 2-0 this spring with wins against No. 28 Austin Smith (Georgia) and No. 35 Uros Petronijevic (USD).

The Bruins have not dropped a doubles point yet in dual matches, compiling a 10-1 record as a team. 

Scouting Virginia

Virginia (4-0) is 23-1 in singles matches in duals this season.  Second-ranked Thai-Son Kwiatkowski is one of five Cavaliers currently ranked in the ITA Men's National Singles Rankings.

UCLA is 3-5 all-time against Virginia.  The Cavaliers downed the Bruins 4-3 to win the 2013 NCAA Championship in Urbana, Ill.  The Bruins won the last meeting, 4-3, in Los Angeles in 2014.

Tuesday's match will serve as warm-up before both teams compete in this week's ITA National Team Indoor Championship, to be held Feb. 12-15 at the Boar's Head Sports Club.  The ITA Indoors features the top-16 teams in the nation playing for the first team championship of the year.
