This Week — The second-ranked UCLA men's volleyball team (19-3,13-3) plays MPSF matches on Thursday at No. 11 CSUN (13-10, 6-10) at 7 p.m. and on Saturday at No. 4 Long Beach State (19-4, 13-3) at 7 p.m. The Bruins have won six straight and eight of their last nine matches. After taking last week off for exams, the Bruins re-enter league play in a four-way tie for first place with Long Beach, BYU and Stanford to begin the week.

In The Rankings — The Bruins are No. 2 in the AVCA national rankings. UCLA fell from the top spot following a Feb. 5 loss at Hawaii after being ranked No. 1 for three straight weeks. It was the first time the Bruins had held the top spot since being ranked first in the week 4 and 5 AVCA polls during the 2014 season after beginning that year by winning nine of the first 10 matches.
Scouting the Opponents —  CSUN split last week's matches against Long Beach State. The Matadors won on Saturday, in Northridge, in five sets (25-19, 18-25, 25-27, 25-19, 15-13). The 49ers captured the first meeting of the week, on Friday, in three straight sets at Long Beach (25-9, 31-29, 25-23).
Recapping  —  In UCLA's last match on Mar. 11, Michael Fisher totaled a career-best 17 kills and  hit .516 on 31 swings with six digs and three block assists in a sweep of Concordia. Christian Hessenauer finished with a career-high tying four service aces and season-best 11 kills. Micah Ma'a added a couple of aces. John Zappia totaled six total blocks. For the match, UCLA outhit the Eagles .283 to .105. to mark the eighth time in the last nine matches that the opponent hitting % has been below .200.
On Mar. 7, the Bruins defeated then-No. 10 Ball State 25-19, 25-19, 25-20 in Pauley. The Bruins hit .430 for the contest and held their opponent to .160. Oliver Martin led the way with nine kills, hitting .818, while adding a block solo and a pair of assists.  Jake Arnitz posted a team-high 10 kills (.273). The blocking stat was equal at 4.0 total blocks each. UCLA had six aces to one for BSU.
In their last MPSF matches, the Bruins defeated UCSB twice in one week, on Mar. 2 in the Wooden Center (3-1) and on Mar. 4 at Santa Barbara (3-0).
Round One: UCLA earned a 3-1 win (20-25, 25-23, 27-25, 25-19) in the first meeting of the season vs. CSUN on Jan. 29. Jake Arnitz hammered out a career-best 21 kills (23.5 points). Micah Ma'a added a career-best seven aces. Hagen Smith led the Bruins with nine digs and added eight kills (.889). Mitch Stahl finished with five kills and four block assists. UCLA was out aced (9-8) by the Matadors.
In the first game of the season with Long Beach on Jan. 27, Ma'a floated a serve to an opening in the 49ers defense to terminate the match with an ace. He finished with a career-high 13 kills. Arnitz blasted 17 kills at a .429 hitting percentage and added a career-best 13 digs. Stahl finished with eight kills and five block assists. JT Hatch had nine kills, a pair of aces and a career-best 12 digs. Hagen Smith set 25 balls and added 11 digs, a career-high nine kills and a block solo. Davis Gillett finished with eight digs. The Bruins hit .242 for the match to .219 for Long Beach and UCLA won the battle of the block 8.5 to 5.5.
The Bruins' 10-0 start this year was their best since the 1998 squad earned wins in the first 16 matches of that season. As far as conference streaks go, the Bruins also started out 6-0 in the 2014 season (7-0 in 2012 and 10-0 in 1998). UCLA, under the direction of coach Al Scates, owns the only three unbeaten seasons in the history of the men's game (1984:38-0, 1982: 29-0, 1979: 30-0).

Coach Speraw: Year Four at UCLA — John Speraw (UCLA '95), who is in his fourth season as the head coach at his alma mater, has captured three NCAA titles as a head coach (2012, 2009, 2007 at UCI), three as an assistant coach (1996, 1998, 2000 at UCLA) and two as a player (1993, 1995 at UCLA). Also the head coach of the U.S. Men's National Volleyball Team, Speraw led that squad to the 2015 FIVB World Cup and automatic qualification for the 2016 Olympic Games. Speraw came back to UCLA after 10 seasons at UC Irvine where he led the Anteaters to three NCAA championships, and a 199-106 (.646) overall record. In winning that 2007 title, Speraw became the only individual to produce a championship as a head coach, assistant coach and player in collegiate men's volleyball history. On Mar. 25, 2013, he was named head coach of the U.S. Men's National Team for the next quadrennial ending at the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janiero. In the summer of 2014, he guided the U.S. team to a win over top-ranked Brazil in the FIVB World League gold-medal match. In the summer of 2012, he had served as an assistant coach for the National Team, which advanced to the quarterfinals of the London Olympics. Speraw won the National Coach of the Year award in 2007.
