Coming Up— The top-ranked UCLA men's volleyball team (21-3,15-3) hosts No. 3 BYU (19-3, 15-3) on Friday (at 8 p.m. on the Pac-12 Network) and again on Saturday (at 7 p.m.) Both matches will be played in the John Wooden Center. The Bruins have won eight straight and 10 of their last 11 matches. The Bruins begin the week in a three-way tie with BYU and Stanford for first-place in the MPSF.  UCLA will host Stanford next Thursday (5 pm) and Pepperdine (7 pm) on Saturday to complete the regular season.

In The Rankings — The Bruins are No. 1 in the AVCA national rankings. UCLA was in the top spot earlier this season for weeks 2,3 and 4 but fell following a Feb. 5 loss at Hawaii. It was the first time the Bruins had held the top spot since being ranked first in the week 4 and 5 AVCA polls during the 2014 season, after beginning that year by winning nine of the first 10 matches.
Scouting the Opponent —  The Cougars have won 15 of their last 16 matches, with the lone loss coming at the hands of Pepperdine (Mar. 19, 1-3). Fourteen of the fifteen Cougar wins in that stretch have been by 3-0 match results. BYU begins the week, leading the nation in blocks/set (3.29) and in hitting % (.356). Last week, BYU swept a pair of matches at UCSD, winning 25-18, 26-24, 25-21 on Friday and 25-19, 25-13, 25-21 on Saturday. The Cougars are 11-1 on the road this season (the lone loss was Jan. 23 at Long Beach State). The Bruins lost both matches at BYU last season (0-3 and 1-3 in January). UCLA won the last meeting played in Westwood, April 12, 2014, by a 3-1 score.
Recapping  —  Last Saturday night, UCLA captured its eighth straight win by registering a sweep at No. 4 Long Beach State. Scores of the match were 25-22, 25-22, 25-22. Jake Arnitz led the way for UCLA with 16 kills while hitting .400. JT Hatch added 10 kills (.348) and Eric Sprague recorded a season-high eight kills (.800). Hagen Smith totaled eight digs, three blocks, an ace and 19 set assists. Davis Gillett had 11 digs. The Bruins out hit the 49ers .323 to .250 on the night.
On last Thursday, UCLA rallied to defeat CSUN in five sets (19-25, 25-20, 23-25, 25-16, 15-7). Oliver Martin had eight kills (.583) to go along with career-best totals of two block solos and eight block assists. JT Hatch added a season-beset 20 kills and hit .333 for the Bruins who out hit CSUN .285 to .174 for the match. Micah Ma'a added a career-best eight block assists. Jake Arnitz finished with 16 kills and three block assists. Davis Gillett contributed a career-high 15 digs. Hagen Smith had 28 set assists and a couple of block assists.
The Bruins' 10-0 start this year was their best since the 1998 squad earned wins in the first 16 matches of that season. UCLA, under the direction of coach Al Scates, owns the only three unbeaten seasons in the history of the men's game (1984:38-0, 1982: 29-0, 1979: 30-0).

Coach Speraw: Year Four at UCLA — John Speraw (UCLA '95), who is in his fourth season as the head coach at his alma mater, has captured three NCAA titles as a head coach (2012, 2009, 2007 at UCI), three as an assistant coach (1996, 1998, 2000 at UCLA) and two as a player (1993, 1995 at UCLA). Also the head coach of the U.S. Men's National Volleyball Team, Speraw led that squad to the 2015 FIVB World Cup and automatic qualification for the 2016 Olympic Games. Speraw came back to UCLA after 10 seasons at UC Irvine where he led the Anteaters to three NCAA championships, and a 199-106 (.646) overall record. In winning that 2007 title, Speraw became the only individual to produce a championship as a head coach, assistant coach and player in collegiate men's volleyball history. On Mar. 25, 2013, he was named head coach of the U.S. Men's National Team for the next quadrennial ending at the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janiero. In the summer of 2014, he guided the U.S. team to a win over top-ranked Brazil in the FIVB World League gold-medal match. In the summer of 2012, he had served as an assistant coach for the National Team, which advanced to the quarterfinals of the London Olympics. Speraw won the National Coach of the Year award in 2007.
