Men's Volleyball

Micah Ma'a was named National Co-Freshman of the Week.

Off the Block announced on Monday that UCLA setter Micah Ma'a and Loyola outside attacker Will Tischler were named the Off the Block/Springbak, Inc. Co-National Freshmen of the Week.

Ma'a guided the UCLA offense to a .307 attack percentaga and added six kills (.286), six digs and a career-best two block solos in a sweep against No. 3 Stanford on Thursday. The setter also helped the team hit .420 in the regular-season finale victory versus No. 6 Pepperdine which clinched the MPSF Tournament's No. 2 seed.

Ma'a recorded two aces in the win over the Waves to give him 54 for the season, just two shy of the Bruin school season mark for the rally scoring era held by Gonzalo Quiroga (2014) and Adam Naeve (2001).

This is the fourth time this season that Ma'a has earned the national award (also Feb. 22, Jan. 31, Jan. 11). Ma'a and the Bruins will host No. 7 seed Hawai'i on Saturday night at 7 p.m. in Pauley Pavilion in a quarterfinal match of the MPSF playoffs.

The Off the Block/Springbak, Inc. National Freshman of the Week award is presented each week during the regular season to the NCAA Division I-II men's volleyball freshman who had the most outstanding performance and is announced on the website offtheblockblog.com.
