OJAI, Calif. – Shaking off its loss to crosstown rival USC last weekend, the No. 25 UCLA women's tennis team gears up for postseason action as it heads to Ojai for the Pac-12 Women's Tennis Championships. Heading into the tournament, the Bruins are fifth in the conference with a 14-6 record overall and 6-3 mark in Pac-12 play.
The 32-player singles draw consists of three players from each of the top ten schools that sponsor women's tennis and two players from the 11th-place team, based on the regular season standings. The 16-team women's doubles draw will have one doubles team from each of the 11 schools and five additional teams selected by the Draw Committee.
Last time out, the Bruins fell to No. 21 USC in their last regular season match. In an unprecedented doubleheader with the men's tennis teams, the Bruins split with the Trojans. On the men's side, UCLA downed USC, 4-2, to clinch the Pac-12 regular season title. The Women of Troy were looking for retribution, as they defeated the Bruins, 4-1. Freshman Alaina Miller put the lone Bruin point on the board when she dispatched No. 99 Gabby Smith in straight sets.
The Bruins are led by the usual suspects in singles, with No. 17 Catherine Harrison at the helm. Harrison owns a 16-2 dual match record at the top of the lineup and is 8-2 against ranked opponents this spring. Against ranked Pac-12 opponents, the Bruin senior is 5-1—her only loss at the hands of Cal's No. 13 Maegan Manasse (Feb. 20). Playing in the No. 2 spot, senior Kyle McPhillips is 15-3 and 5-2 against ranked opponents. Splitting time at Nos. 3 and 4, Miller has compiled a 13-5 mark this spring and is 7-2 at the three spot. Sophomore Terri Fleming began the season at No. 5 and has played her way up the lineup. Fleming is 5-2 since securing the No. 3 spot in the lineup on March 12 against Stanford.
In doubles play, sixth-ranked Harrison and McPhillips own a 13-3 record and are 6-2 against ranked opponents. Most notably, the pair has downed Pepperdine's third-ranked Matea Cutura and Christine Maddox (Feb. 18), Cal's second-ranked Maegan Manasse and Denise Starr (Feb. 20), and USC's eighth-ranked Giuliana Olmos and Gabby Smith (Feb. 25). Last time out, the pair fell to USC's ninth-ranked Olmos and Smith on April 17.
Harrison returns to Ojai this week as the defending Pac-12 singles champion. Last year, Harrison began her match against Cal's Klara Fabikova down 2-0 in the first set, but battled back to win four of the next six games to take the first set, 6-4. She continued her hot streak through the second set, blanking the 25th-ranked Fabikova, 6-0, in the second to win the championship. The two players had met twice before in the 2014 regular season, with Harrison winning the first match on Feb. 21, 2014, and Fabikova winning the second match on Apr. 4, 2014.
Harrison's win marked the third-straight singles championship for the UCLA women, as McPhillips won it in 2013 and Jennifer Brady won in 2014. It was also UCLA's ninth-overall singles championship.
Pac-12 competition will be held in conjunction with the 116th Annual Ojai Valley Tennis Tournament. The Pac-12 men will compete at Libbey Park in Ojai for all rounds. The Pac-12 women will play the first two rounds at the Ojai Valley Athletic Club, and then will play the semifinals and finals at Libbey Park. The men's team championship match will be played at Libbey Park on Saturday at 6 p.m. The women's singles championship match is scheduled for 10 a.m. on Sunday at Libbey Park and will be followed by the doubles final at 1 p.m.
Pac-12 Network will be broadcasting the tennis championships live for both of the men's matches on Friday as well as the Championship match on Saturday. The women's singles championship on Sunday will be broadcast live at 10 a.m. along with the doubles championship at 1 p.m.
