LOS ANGELES - A small group of the UCLA track and field team will compete this week as the throwers head to the Olympic Training Center on Thursday and then head to San Diego along with other field athletes to the Triton Invitational on Friday, April 22 and Saturday, April 23.
Kicking off the field events on Friday will be the women's hammer throw at 9:30 a.m. Continuing into Saturday the field events will begin at 9:30 a.m. with the men's hammer throw
Last weekend the Bruins posted several lifetime bests and impressive national leading marks Saturday in the dual meet against Texas A&M. Freshman Stamatia Scarvelis seized the lead on her sixth and final throw in the hammer with a personal best mark of 196-11 to win the event and improve the seventh best throw in UCLA history.
Her brother Nicholas Scarvelis had an outstanding opening to his outdoor season with a national leading and personal best throw of 67-0 to win the shot put. For his efforts he was named the Pac-12 Field Athlete of the Week.
The UCLA men's track and field team moved into the USTFCCCA rankings this week as the Bruins check in at No. 23, the organization announced Monday. On top of the team ranking UCLA has 15 marks in the TFFRS top-25 (as of 4/18). Of the 15 marks in the top 25 the Bruins have five in the top 10.
Next weekend the Bruins will host their cross-town rivals in the annual UCLA vs. USC dual meet. The meet will take place on Sunday, May 1st beginning at 9 a.m. with the women's hammer throw and on the track at 12:30 p.m. with the women's steeple. The cross-town rivalry will air live on the Pac-12 Networks starting at 2:00 p.m. with the men's high jump and women's triple jump followed by the women's 400m on the track.
