OJAI, Calif. – In her second straight trip to the Pac-12 Singles Championship match, defending champion Catherine Harrison was unable to capture back-to-back titles as she fell to top-seeded Maegan Manasse of Cal on Sunday morning.
“To be honest, Maegan just played lights out today,” said Harrison of Manasse's performance. “There wasn't a single weakness that I could find in her game. Her forehand and backhand—she was hitting winners on both sides. She served really well too.”
In was neck and neck throughout the first set, each player holding but failing to capitalize on break points. Manasse led 4-3 and jumped to a 40-0 lead in the eighth game. Third-seeded Harrison won two straight points to cut the deficit to 40-30, but double faulted to give Manasse a 5-3 lead in the set. The top-seeded Golden Bear then held to take the first set, 6-3.
Carrying this momentum into the second set, Manasse jumped out to a comfortable 4-1 lead. At deuce, Harrison worked the corners to wear down Manasse in a long rally. Outlasting her Cal opponent, Harrison won her first break point of the match. Up 4-2, Manasse broke right back to inch closer to victory. Unable to keep pace, Harrison dropped two straight and fell to Manasse, 6-3, 6-2.
“Overall, I didn't play close to my best tennis,” said Harrison of her own performance in the final. “It happens though. Last year I played great. This year, I didn't quite play my best. I was proud of myself for having the mental toughness to make it back to the final this time around. Unfortunately, it just didn't go my way today.”
In the Doubles Invitational final, sophomore Terri Fleming and freshman Alaina Miller upset second-seeded Sammi Hampton and Kassidy Jump of Arizona State. The Bruin pair held to take the set, 6-3, and capture the title.
