LUCERNE, Switzerland - 2016 UCLA women's volleyball sophomore Zana Muno and incoming freshman Torrey Van Winden each took their talents to the beach last week, representing the United States at the FIVB Under 21 World Championships.

Van Winden, along with partner Sarah Sponcil, finished fourth, while Muno and partner Abril Bustamante tied for 17th. Van Winden and Sponcil were a perfect 3-0 in pool play on May 12 and 13, winning all six sets to advance to the round of 16 in which they beat a team from Austria in straight sets on May 14. The next day, Van Winden and Sponcil were taken to three sets, but prevailed over a Russian duo to move on to the semifinals on May 16. The gold-medal run for the United States team would end against a Brazilian pair in straight sets. In the third-place match, Van Winden met up with a pair of beach volleyball Bruins, Megan and Nicole McNamara, and fell in three sets.

Muno, who flew in from Alabama following an All-Tournament performance at the inaugural NCAA Beach Volleyball Championships, advanced to the main draw after going 3-0 on May 11 in the qualification portion of the tournament. Muno and Bustamante then advanced to the knockout stage after going 2-1 in pool play on May 12 and 13. In the round of 24, the duo fell to a team from Austria in three sets to tie for 17th.
