The UCLA women's soccer team recently finished a successful 2016 spring season, going 4-1-1 overall.
Darian Jenkins, the Bruins' top goal-scorer in 2013 and 2015, led UCLA offensively in the spring, scoring five goals, including three in the Bruins' 5-0 win over UC Santa Barbara on Apr. 9. Newcomer Julia Hernandez, who enrolled this Spring after transferring from Eastern Florida State College, made her presence felt quickly, scoring three goals, including two in a 4-1 win over Long Beach State. Team captain Annie Alvarado also totaled three goals, while MacKenzie Cerda added two. Courtney Proctor and Amber Munerlyn scored one goal apiece.
UCLA's spring season began with a 1-0 win at Cal State Northridge on Feb. 27. Alvarado netted the game-winner. After a loss to Pepperdine on Mar. 12, the Bruins rebounded with three-straight wins, defeating JFA Academy on Mar. 29 by a score of 2-1. Goals were scored by Jenkins and Cerda. The Bruin offense came alive in a big way the weekend of Apr. 9-10, with a 5-0 win over UCSB and a 4-1 victory over Long Beach State. Jenkins had a hat trick in the UCSB game, and Alvarado and Cerda also scored. Hernandez scored two goals in the Long Beach State contest, and Alvarado and Proctor added a goal apiece. In the spring finale on Apr. 17, Hernandez, Jenkins and Munerlyn scored in the 3-3 tie against Cal State Fullerton.
The Bruins will begin the 2016 season in August with the No. 1 recruiting class in the nation, led by three Top 10 players in U.S. National Team member Mal Pugh (No. 1), U.S. U-20 National Team member Marley Canales (No. 2) and Canadian National Team member Jessie Fleming (No. 10). The fall schedule will be released in June.
