Incoming freshman Jessie Fleming (London, Ontario, Canada) was named to Canada's Olympic women's soccer team. Although she is the second-youngest player on the squad at 18 years old, the midfielder has already logged 28 caps, including two at the 2015 FIFA Women's World Cup.
Fleming, who is a member of UCLA's No. 1-ranked recruiting class, made her Canadian National Team debut in December of 2013 when she was just 15 years old. She helped Canada win gold at the 2016 Algarve Cup and silver at the 2015 Cyprus Cup and also won the Golden Ball at the CONCACAF U-17 Championships in 2013. In 2015, she was named the Canadian female U-20 Player of the Year, following up on her 2014 Canadian U-17 Player of the Year award.
The Olympic Tournament takes place Aug. 3-19 in Brazil. The Canadians are in Group F, along with Australia, Zimbabwe and Germany, and will face Australia in the opening match on Aug. 3 in São Paulo. Canada won bronze at the last Olympic Games in London, capturing the nation's first Olympic medal in a summer team sport since 1936.
Fleming will be the third UCLA soccer player to play for the Canadian Olympic team. She joins Chelsea Stewart, who played in 2012, and Kara Lang, who played in 2008.
