LOS ANGELES – The UCLA men's water polo team announced its 2016 schedule today, highlighted by conference road games at USC and California and a home date with Stanford.
The Bruins will also compete in four different regular-season invitationals during the year.
There will be a new look to the MPSF in 2016 after Pacific, UC Santa Barbara, UC Irvine, Long Beach State, Pepperdine and last year's newcomer San Jose State defected to form their own league. The MPSF currently has just five members (UCLA, USC, California, Stanford and Penn State Behrend). Penn State Behrend was officially added on June 30, 2016. The Lions will not compete in the regular season round-robin conference schedule, but will travel to compete in the MPSF Championship Tournament at USC on Nov. 18-20.
UCLA will open the season at the Triton Invitational on the campus of UC San Diego on Sept. 3. While that schedule has not been announced, the Bruins are slated to play UCSD and one other team on Sept. 3. The Bruins will stay in San Diego to host the UCLA Invitational on Sept. 4 at Cathedral Catholic High School. UCLA will take on Redlands at 9:00 a.m., Loyola Marymount at 11:40 a.m. and Chapman at 2:20 p.m. before scrimmaging Stanford at 3:30 p.m.
The Bruins will then head to Princeton, N.J., to compete in the Princeton Invitational on Sept. 9-11. UCLA will open with three straight exhibition games vs. California and Air Force on the 9th and Brown on the 10th. UCLA will face Johns Hopkins at 3:00 p.m. PT on the 10th and then Princeton (8:45 a.m.) and St. Francis Brooklyn (11:45 a.m.) on the 11th.
The home opener is next as UCLA hosts former MPSF foe Pepperdine at 7:00 p.m. on Sept. 16. Another former MPSF team is next as the Bruins travel to Long Beach State on Sept. 17 for a 7:00 p.m. matchup. The following weekend is the Kap7 NorCal Invitational (Sept. 23-25) with the schedule and seedings being announced the week prior to competition.
The Bruins return home to host a triple-header on Oct. 1, beginning with UC Irvine at Noon and Claremont-Mudd-Scripps at 2:00 p.m. before hosting the Alumni at 3:00 p.m. The following weekend UCLA travels North to take on Pacific on Oct. 8 and UC Davis on Oct. 9. UCLA will conclude a four-game road trip with a game at UC Santa Barbara on Oct. 15 and will open league play at California on Oct. 22, making its Pac-12 Network debut for 2016.
UCLA will return home to host Stanford on Oct. 29 on the Pac-12 Networks. The Bruins will also host San Jose State (3:30 p.m.) and Whittier (5:00 p.m.) on Nov. 5 before closing out the regular season at USC on the Pac-12 Networks on Nov. 12. USC will host the five-team MPSF Championships on Nov. 18-20 while California will host the NCAA Championships on Dec. 3-4.
The Bruins finished the 2015 season by winning the program's 10th NCAA Championship and the school's 113th overall with a 10-7 victory over USC. UCLA finished the year with a perfect 30-0 overall record, the Bruins' first undefeated season since 1969 and the school's single-season record for wins. The back-to-back champions enter 2016 with a 33-game winning streak, the second-longest in UCLA history. The Bruins return all but two players from a year ago (Anthony Daboub and Daniel McClintick) for the 2016 campaign. Headlining the group of veterans is seven All-Americans, which includes the Division I Player of the Year and Cutino Award winner, Garrett Danner. The other All-Americans are Ryder Roberts, Gordon Marshall, Patrick Fellner, Max Irving, Chancellor Ramirez and current Team USA Olympian, Alex Roelse.
