The Maxwell Football Club announced on Monday its watch lists for the 80th annual Maxwell Award and the 22nd annual Chuck Bednarik Award. UCLA sophomore quarterback Josh Rosen merited a spot on the Maxwell list which honors the College Player of the Year. Redshirt junior defensive lineman Eddie Vanderdoes was on the Bednarik Award list which recognizes the defensive player of the year.
A year ago, Rosen became the first true freshman to start a season-opener at quarterback for the Bruins. He went on to start all 13 contests and set numerous school marks in his initial campaign including a stretch of 245 consecutive passing attempts without an interception and most completions in a game (34). In addition, he matched the school record by throwing for 300-yards in six games vs. Nebraska (319 yards), Washington State (340), Oregon State (333), Cal (399), Stanford (325) and Virginia (350). His total of 410 yards of total offense against Washington State ranks No. 9 on the all-time school list. Rosen was named The Sporting News' Freshman of the Year and a first-team Freshman All-America by The Sporting News, USA Today and the Football Writers of America (FWAA). The Pac-12 coaches voted him the league's Offensive Freshman of the Year.
Vanderdoes returns to health after having his 2015 season cut short by injury. He has made 20 career starts for the Bruins along the defensive front. Vanderdoes had racked up eight tackles, two for loss, in last year's season-opening win over Virginia when he went down and sat out the balance of the year. In the 2014 season, he ranked eighth on the team with 50 tackles. His total of 11 tackles in a 2013 contest against Stanford were the most by a Bruin defensive lineman since 1992

Maxwell's contributions to the game of football were extensive, including time as a player, a sportswriter and an official. The Bednarik Award has been presented to the College Defensive Player of the Year since 1995. Chuck Bednarik, former standout at Penn and with the Philadelphia Eagles, is a member of both the College Football Hall of Fame's Class of '69 and the NFL Hall of Fame's Class of '67.
Semifinalists for the Maxwell and Bednarik Awards will be announced October 31, 2016, while the three finalists for each award will be unveiled November 21, 2016. The winners of the 2016 Maxwell and Bednarik Awards will be announced as part of the Home Depot College Football Awards Show held on December 8, 2016. The formal presentations of these awards will be made at the Maxwell Football Club Awards Gala hosted by Tropicana Hotel & Casino Atlantic City on March 10, 2017.
