Men's Water Polo
Team USA lost to Montenegro, 8-5, on Friday, eliminating the team's chances to earn a medal. With the loss the United States remains in fifth place in Group B action at 1-3, having dropped matches to the two teams ahead (Spain and Montenegro). Only the top four teams advance to the quarterfinal round from each group. Bruin alumnus Josh Samuels got his fourth straight start and led Team USA in scoring for the second consecutive game with two goals. He also added one steal and won his team's only sprint, playing 29:17. UCLA junior Alex Roelse came off the bench to play 10:31 before fouling out. He registered the team's only assist in the match. Team USA concludes pool play with Italy on Sunday, Aug. 14. The match will air on NBC at 2:30 pm PT and stream live on NBCOlympics.com and NBC Sports App at 11:30am PT.

Women's Volleyball
UCLA alumna Karsta Lowe played all rotations for the last set and a quarter on Friday, posting 10 kills during that stretch, as Team USA defeated Italy in four sets. Head coach Karch Kiraly's team is 4-0 with one pool play match remaining on Sunday against China (1:05 pm PT). Lowe finished Friday's contest with 12 kills, producing one in each of the first two sets, four in the third and six in the fourth.

Women's Basketball
Bruin alumna Nirra Fields and ninth-ranked Team Canada (3-1) dropped its first game of the 2016 Olympics, falling to top-ranked Team USA (4-0), 81-51. Fields came off the bench to play 13:58, finishing second on the team in scoring with seven points. She also added two rebounds and one steal while going 1-for-2 from three-point range. The Canadians conclude Pool B play on Sunday, Aug. 14 when they take on third-ranked Spain (2-1) at 1:45pm PT.

Women's Soccer
Jessie Fleming and Team Canada advanced to the semifinals after a 1-0 victory over France in quarterfinal action. Sophie Schmidt scored the lone goal in the 56th minute. Fleming made her fourth consecutive start and played the full 90 minutes. Canada will face Germany in the semifinals on Aug. 16 at 12pm PT.

Team USA's Olympic run came to an end at the hands of Sweden in the quarterfinal round. After the two teams drew to a 1-1 tie by the end of extra time, Sweden outlasted the United States in penalty kicks, 4-3. Incoming freshman Mal Pugh started for Team USA and played 114 minutes, taking three shots on goal. The U.S. team outshot Sweden by a 27-6 margin and drew 12 corner kicks to Sweden's three. Stina Blackstenius opened the scoring for Sweden, scoring 61 minutes into the match before Team USA responded on a goal by Alex Morgan after 77 minutes.

After a scoreless draw over regulation and overtime, Brazil also went to penalty kicks in the final quarterfinal match and outlasted Australia, 7-6. UCLA goalkeeper coach Aline Reis did not play. Each goalkeeper from Brazil and Australia saved a potential game-winning shot in the fifth round of penalties, and Brazil's Barbara made a diving save in the eighth round to send the host nation into the semifinal against Sweden. That match will take place on Aug. 16 at 9am PT.

Badminton
Howard Shu, a 2013 graduate of UCLA, dropped a straight-set match in men's singles group stage play to Tommy Sugiarto (Japan) on Friday morning. Set scores were 14-21, 10-21. Shu will return to action in Group J on Saturday morning (7:20 am PT) against Osleni Guerrero of Cuba.

In mixed doubles group stage play, UCLA graduate Jamie Subandhi and her partner Philip Chew lost in straight sets to Ayane Kurihara and Kenta Kazuno (Japan). Set scores were 6-21, 12-21. Subandhi and Chew will compete in Group D against Selena Piek and Jacco Arends of the Netherlands on Saturday (11:55 am PT).

Current UCLA undergraduate student Iris Wang won a three-set match in group play (women's singles) to Portugal's Telma Santos on Friday evening. She secured her second three-set victory in group play in as many days (set scores were 21-18, 10-21, 21-12). Wang, who earned her first-ever Olympic victory on Thursday, trailed 8-5 in the final set before closing with a 16-7 scoring run to win, 21-12.
