
No. 17 UCLA Posts 75-73 Win at WSU

PULLMAN, Wash., -- No. 17 UCLA ended a two-game skid with a 75-73 win at Washington State (12-6, 3-4) on Sunday afternoon at Beasley Coliseum. The Bruins improved to 12-5 overall and 4-2 in the Pac-12. UCLA also improved to 51-7 overall against WSU, including a 23-7 mark in Pullman, Wash.
Monique Billings led UCLA in scoring with 19 points and added nine rebounds. Jordin Canada chipped in 16 points, six assists and four rebounds.
Billings scored six points in the opening quarter to help get the Bruins out to a 16-13 lead. UCLA forced seven Cougar miscues which helped offset a 15-7 rebounding advantage to Washington State.
In the second quarter, the Bruins put 26 points on the board to take a 42-34 lead into the break. UCLA led 29-24 when Kari Korver completed a four-point play to extend the lead to 33-24 at the 4:08 mark of the period. UCLA led by as many as 10 points (42-32) after a layup by Billings with 0:48 left in the second. Billings led all scorers with 14 points by halftime.
UCLA led for the entire third period, but Washington State made its final four shots, including two three-pointers, to close the gap to 58-57 by the end of the quarter.
In the final period, UCLA seemed to have things in control, leading by eight (74-66) after a pair of free throws by Kelli Hayes (4:07). But in the final four minutes of the game, the Bruins missed their last six shots, went 1-for-5 from the free throw line and committed four turnovers. But UCLA got the final stop when it mattered and held on for an important 75-73 road win.
Borslava Hristova led a pair of Cougars in double figures with 19 points. Louis Brown also had 13 points for Washington State.
Korver made four three-pointers for the second straight game, finishing with 13 points. Nirra Fields added 12 points to round out the quartet of double-figures scorers for UCLA.
TIP-INS:
Washington State: The Cougars outrebounded UCLA 48-38, including 19 on the offensive glass and outshot UCLA 43.5 percent (30-for-69) to 38.8 percent (26-for-67) from the field.
UCLA: Kari Korver has made at least one 3-pointer in 28 straight games ... Canada has had five or more assists in 16 of 17 games this season.
