Bruins Advance to Indoor Qualifier

LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- The No. 12 UCLA men's tennis team dispatched No. 46 SMU, 4-0, in the Bruins' ITA Kick-Off Weekend opener on Saturday afternoon. With the win, the Bruins advance to Sunday's Indoor Qualifier match against No. 42 Georgia Tech.
UCLA took an early 1-0 lead, clinching the doubles point. Joseph Di Giulio and Karue Sell quickly registered a 6-3 win over Hunter and Yates Johnson. Freshman Maxime Cressy and sophomore Martin Redlicki followed suit, downing their opponents 6-2.
In singles, Austin Rapp made quick work of Arkadijs Slobodkins on court 5. The Bruin sophomore took the match in straights, giving UCLA a 2-0 lead. Junior Gage Brymer and senior Karue Sell sealed the deal for the Bruins with straight-set wins on courts 2 and 3.
In Saturday morning's match, No. 42 Georgia Tech registered a shutout win over No. 62 New Mexico. The Yellow Jackets will face the Bruins Sunday afternoon at 1:00, with the victor advancing to the USTA/ITA National Team Indoor Championships. The Mustangs take on the Lobos in the consolation match Sunday morning at 10:00.
Women's Competition
No. 9 UCLA faces No. 54 Fresno State in the Indoor Qualifier on Saturday at 3:00 p.m., followed by the consolation match between No. 34 Arkansas and No. 70 UC Irvine at 6:00 p.m.
