Bruins Fall to No. 1 Stanford, 3-2, in 2OT

UCLA ties game in 86th minute, but Stanford wins on golden goal in 103rd minute.

Los Angeles, Calif. - For the second consecutive game, No. 10 UCLA received late-game heroics to send the game to overtime, but the Bruins were unable to get the result this time, falling to No. 1 Stanford, 3-2 in double overtime.

UCLA freshman Jessie Fleming scored the game-tying goal in the 86th minute. MacKenzie Cerda started the play with a throw-in to Amber Munerlyn, who flicked the ball to Fleming for the freshman phenom's team-leading eighth goal of the season.

After both teams traded scoring opportunities in the first overtime, Stanford ended it in the third minute of the second overtime. The Cardinal earned a corner kick, which resulted in a shot by Alana Cook that was saved. After a scramble in the box, Maddie Bauer knocked it in for the golden goal at 102:47.

"We had all the momentum and tied it up late," said UCLA head coach Amanda Cromwell. "I think our girls battled and deserved the win today."

The Bruins (9-3-1, 3-1-1 in the Pac-12) struck first on a goal by Munerlyn at the 11:04 mark. Munerlyn took a pass from Annie Alvarado on the right side and shot past Stanford goalkeeper Jane campbell for her third goal of the year. It took Stanford less than three minutes to equalize, however. After a short corner kick, Megan Turner sent a ball into the box that UCLA goalkeeper Teagan Micah swiped away. The ball went to Andi Sullivan, however, and the Stanford junior finished for her fifth goal of the season.

The Cardinal (11-1-1, 4-1-0) broke the 1-1 tie in the 63rd minute on a close-range shot by Michelle Xiao after a throw-in.

Until Fleming was able to break through late, the Bruins had been thwarted on several scoring opportunities, with Campbell making a save on a shot in the box by Sunny Dunphy in the 68th minute and a shot by Zoey Goralski after a corner kick in the 70th minute.

The Bruins had two pivotal moments in the first overtime that could have given them the victory. In the 93rd minute, Anika Rodriguez unleashed a shot that Campbell got a hand on. The ball got past Campbell and was headed for goal, but Sullivan cleared it off the line. A few minutes later, MacKenzie Cerda sent an outstanding through ball to Alvarado. However, Alvarado went down in the box, and Stanford regained possession.

Stanford outshot UCLA in the game, 19-12, and had eight corners to UCLA's three. Micah had six saves for the Bruins, while Campbell had three.

The Bruins will resume Pac-12 play on Thursday, Oct. 13 at Arizona.
