Cross Country Tackles Central Park

SANTA CLARITA, Calif. – The UCLA cross country team once again posted a strong performance at the fifth annual Mustang Challenge, held at Central Park on Saturday morning.
The Bruins had a small squad running in uniform on Saturday. On the men's side, redshirt freshman George Gleason was the top finisher by placing third with a time of 25:01.3. Sophomore Arturo Sotomayor followed in seventh with a time of 25:23.8 while sophomore Sahm Bazargan was just outside of the top-10 in 11th with a 25:34.7. Rounding out the Bruins top-5 was Max Davis in 14th with a 25:51.0 and sophomore Scott Snow in 45th at 26:45.5.
More highlights for UCLA came from the unattached runners. Freshman Garrett Reynolds won the competition with a course record 24:47.3. He broke the record set by Sergey Sushchikh in 2013. Freshman John Carter Blunt was fourth overall with a 25:06.7 while Tyler Janes was eighth at 25:28.1. Freshman Riley Kelly was 44th in 26:45.2.
In the women's 5k freshman Beckie Alch paced the Bruins in 22nd with a time of 18:52.5. Redshirt freshman Madison Moore was 46th at 19:28.9 while freshman Sweena Mangal and redshirt freshman Sarah Riggs rounded out the Bruins in 54th (19:41.0) and 97th (21:08.4), respectively.
Running unattached, freshman Lilly Schmidt was 16th at 18:41.7 and was followed by freshman Sarah Holloway (23rd, 18:54.1), freshman Taylor Beaudoin (31st, 19:02.3) and freshman Grace McAuley (50th, 19:36.1).
The Bruins will train through next weekend as they prepare for the Wisconsin Invitational. The prestigious meet is scheduled for Friday, Oct. 14.
