Future Bruins Marley Canales and Mal Pugh have been selected to represent the United States at the 2016 FIFA Under-20 Women's World Cup, which will take place in Papua New Guinea from Nov. 13-Dec. 3.
The U.S. opens tournament play on Nov. 14 against France, then will face New Zealand on Nov. 17 and Ghana on Nov. 21. All matches will be broadcast on the FOX family of networks.
Canales, a midfielder, was a key member of the U.S. team that won the 2015 CONCACAF U-20 Championship to qualify to the World Cup. She was also an all-tournament selection at the 2013 CONCACAF U-17 Championship.
Pugh, a forward, started in the last U-20 Women's World Cup as a 16-year-old and also started for the U.S. at the 2016 Olympics, where she became the youngest American soccer player ever to score in the Olympic Games. Pugh currently has 17 caps and four goals for the U.S. Women's National Team and 23 caps and 17 goals for the U-20s. In U-20 World Cup qualifying, Pugh led the U.S. with seven goals and four assists, and she won both the Golden Boot as the top scorer and the Golden Ball as the best player.
Canales and Pugh delayed enrollment at UCLA to participate in the tournament and are expected to enroll in January for Winter Quarter.
