UCLA Begins Three-Game Homestand
The No. 24 UCLA Bruins (7-4-1, 3-2-0) will begin a three-game homestand this week with a pair of Pac-12 matches, starting on Thurs., Oct. 20 against California (4-6-2, 0-4-1) at 8 pm. UCLA will also host No. 12 Stanford (8-2-3, 5-0-0) on Sunday, Oct. 23 at 5 pm. Both matches will be broadcast live on the Pac-12 Network and are a part of a doubleheader with the women's soccer team.
GolDEN Game Thursday
The first 150 UCLA students to attend Thursday's game at 8pm will receive a free UCLA Soccer scarf, plus pizza and root beer floats.
AYSO Appreciation Day Saturday
Saturday's match against Stanford will be the annual AYSO appreciation day - All AYSO members wearing their team jerseys will be granted free admission.
Alumni Weekend
UCLA Soccer is hosting a Fall Alumni Weekend for both men's and women's alumni this week. The weekend activities include a ticket to the UCLA Football Homecoming game on Oct. 22, halftime recognition at the Oct. 23 games, a men's alumni game on Oct. 23, a postgame clinic after the Oct. 23 women's game, and an alumni barbeque. Alumni seeking more information can contact assistant coach Phil Marfuggi.
Last Time Out
The Bruins went 1-1 last week starting with a 4-3 win at California as UCLA scored with just two seconds remaining in regulation off a Blayne Martinez goal. Seyi Adekoya served a corner kick into the box and it eventually fell to the foot of Martinez who put it in the back of the net with just two seconds left on the clock. Adekoya totaled three points including a goal of the year candidate in the second half, while Brian Iloski scored his team-best fourth of the year and Jason Romero added his second goal of the season. UCLA ended the week by falling to No. 16 Stanford, 3-0, on the road as the Cardinal scored all three of their goals in the second half.
UCLA vs. Top 20
UCLA's match against No. 12 Stanford will be the team's seventh against a Top 20 opponent this season. With wins over No. 1 Akron (6-1), No. 13 UCSB (2-1 in OT) and No. 13 San Diego State (1-0), a tie against No. 4 Maryland (1-1), and losses to No. 16 Washington (4-0) and No. 16 Stanford (3-0), the Bruins are 3-2-1 this year against Top 20 teams and 17-9-6 since 2013.
In the Rankings
The Bruins fell from 17th to 24th in the NSCAA rankings, but stayed at 16th in the Soccer America poll and jumped up from receiving votes to 25th in the Top Drawer Soccer poll.
National Leaders
At the start of the week, Jackson Yueill ranked 15th in the nation in assists per game (0.50) and 19th in total assists (6). As a team, UCLA ranked 40th in scoring offense (1.75), 42nd in assists per game (1.58), and 44th in points per game (5.08).
Scouting the Bears
California is 4-6-2 this season including just 0-4-1 in Pac-12 play. Halfway through conference play the Golden Bears average 1.2 goals per game but also allow an average of two goals per contest. Jose Carerra-Garcia is tops in the conference with three goals and averaging 1.2 points per Pac-12 game.
The Series with California
UCLA is 43-15-6 all-time against California as the Bruins last week earned a 4-3 victory over the Golden Bears as UCLA scored with just 2 seconds remaining in regulation.
Scouting the Cardinal
Stanford was unbeaten in the first half of the Pac-12 season and is a perfect 5-0 entering this week's action. The Cardinal has allowed only one goal during conference play and has the conference's best goal-differential at +8. Stanford's goalkeeper, Andrew Epstein, is tops in the Pac-12 in both save percentage (.933) and goals against average (0.19).
The Series with Stanford
UCLA is 44-8-10 all-time against Stanford after a 3-0 loss on the road last week. The Cardinal used three second-half goals to earn the victory as the Bruins are 0-2-1 in its last three contests against Stanford.
Starting Four
Four Bruins have started all 12 games for UCLA this season - defenders Reggie Cannon and Matthew Powell; and midfielders Erik Holt and Jose Hernandez. Only one player has surpassed 1,100 minutes this season - Holt with 1,108. Hernandez follows close behind having played in 1,079, while Powell has totaled 1066 minutes and Cannon has played in 1,009 minutes.
Amick Nominated for Senior Class Award
Senior defender Michael Amick has been selected as one of 30 candidates for the 2016 Senior CLASS Award for men's soccer. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as a NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence: community, classroom, character and competition. An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School®, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.
Danladi's Dandy Debut
Junior forward Abu Danladi did not play in the team's first three games of the season due to a hamstring injury, but he made an epic season debut on Sept. 5 against Akron. Just eight minutes into his first game, he scored his first goal of the year, and then 11 seconds after that, he scored his second. Only two other players in NCAA history have scored two consecutive goals in a shorter time span.
Yueill Ties School Record for Assists
Sophomore midfielder Jackson Yueill tied the school record for assists in a game with four in the Bruins' 6-1 win over Akron on Sept. 5. Yueill, who was named to Top Drawer Soccer's Team of the Week after that feat, had all four of his assists in the second half, including assists on the three goals that UCLA scored in a NCAA-record 32-second span. Yueill ranks fifth in the nation and first in the Pac-12 in assists per game with an average of 0.60 and is ninth nationally and first in the Pac-12 in total assists with six. In just over one season, Yueill has already totaled 12 career assists.
Record-Setters
In just one half of action against top-ranked Akron on Sept. 5, UCLA set or tied several records. The Bruins set an NCAA record by scoring three goals in 32 seconds (Abu Danladi, 52:28 and 52:39; Blayne Martinez, 53:00). The previous record was 43 seconds, set by Syracuse in 1989. Danladi's two goals, 11 seconds apart, gave him the distinction of having the third-fastest consecutive goals in NCAA history. Only Robby Christner of Oregon State (:08 in 2008) and Jon Hall of American (:09 in 1987) scored two goals faster. UCLA now has three players in the Top 11 in this category. Julio Umana scored two goals in 15 seconds in 1994 vs. CSUN, and Eddie Lewis scored two in 20 seconds in 1994 vs. Davidson. Additionally, Jackson Yueill tied the UCLA record held by Michael Stephens (2008) and Zak Ibsen (1991) for most assists in a game with four.
Henderson Inducted into UCLA Athletics Hall of Fame
On Sept. 30, former U.S. National Team standout Chris Henderson became the eighth representative from men's soccer to be inducted into the UCLA Athletics Hall of Fame. Henderson was selected to Soccer America's All-Freshman team in 1989, and as a sophomore in 1990, he earned first-team NSCAA All-America honors while leading the Bruins to their second NCAA title. He was one of just three collegiate players to earn a spot on the 1990 U.S. World Cup team and was the youngest player in the tournament. Henderson, who totaled 79 caps for the U.S. National Team, was also a member of the 1992 U.S. Olympic team and an alternate for the 1994 and 1998 World Cup squads. After playing professionally in Europe, Henderson played in Major League Soccer from 1996-2001 and retired as the league's all-time leader in games played with 317.
