Women's Tennis Heads to ITA Regionals
October 19, 2016 | Women's Tennis
SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The UCLA women's tennis team heads to San Diego to compete in the 2016 ITA Southwest Regional Championships Presented by Oracle. The five-day event runs Oct. 20-24 at San Diego's Barnes Tennis Center.Â
Freshman standout Ena Shibahara has had a prolific fall debut for the Bruins. Fresh off claiming the Oracle ITA Masters singles title in Malibu last weekend, Shibahara also paired with teammate Jada Hart to capture the U.S. Open Junior Girls' Doubles crown in September.Â
Joining Shibahara in San Diego are Hart, Terri Fleming, Kristin Wiley, and Alaina Miller. Shibahara will compete in doubles only, while Wiley competes in singles only. The remaining Bruins hit the courts for both.  Â
Last season, top-seeded Catherine Harrison fell to Pepperdine's Luisa Stefani in the championship final. Stefani edged the Bruin 7-6(8), 6-4. Harrison, ranked No. 22 in the nation in the 2015 ITA preseason rankings, made a great run at the tournament. She also ousted No. 59 Gabby Smith of USC in the semifinals in straight sets to advance to the final.Â
The ITA Regional Championships feature some of the top men's and women's players across the country. Over 8,000 student-athletes from NCAA Division I, II, III, NAIA, Junior and Community Colleges compete across 85 ITA Regional Championships around the country.
