Men's Soccer Drops Home Match to California, 2-1
October 20, 2016 | Men's Soccer
Los Angeles, Calif. - Felix Vobejda scored the match's opening goal in the 67th minute off a pass from Blayne Martinez as No. 24 UCLA fell to California, 2-1, on Thursday from Drake Stadium.
"Tonight was a game where we should have won but we had a couple critical errors on our part," said UCLA head coach Jorge Salcedo. "We gave up a bad first goal and then we were in possession and gave up a ball where we were exposed and they got us on the counter. It is a tough result because I thought we should have won the game but obviously when you give up bad goals you have a chance to lose and that is what happened tonight."
The Golden Bears netted the game-winning goal late in regulation as a through ball from Jose Carerra-Garcia found Christian Thierjung on a counter attack who was able to shoot low to the far post for the goal in the 84th minute.
The Bruins scored the opening goal in the 67th minute as Martinez worked hard to keep possession in the box and found a cutting Vobejda who shot from 17 yards away to the far left post for his second goal of the season. California tied the game just minutes later as Carerra-Garcia collected a Bruin clearance from a corner kick and took a hard shot to the far post.
The match was scoreless after the first half with the Bruins holding a 6-2 advantage in shots. Seyi Adekoya had the first scoring chance of the match as he received a long through ball in the 19th minute from Jackson Yueill and beat the Cal keeper one-on-one but hit the far left post. In the 28th minute, the Golden Bears earned a penalty kick but Thierjung sent his attempt high above the bar to keep the match scoreless.
UCLA (7-5-1, 3-3-0) returns to the pitch on Sunday to host the first-place Stanford Cardinal at 5 pm from Drake Stadium.
