Cressy Downs No. 1 Seed at USC Tourney

LOS ANGELES, Calif. โ Singles main draw action is underway at the 60th Annual Southern California Intercollegiate Championships, and UCLA's Maxime Cressy ousted the tournament's No. 1 seed in the round of 16 on Friday afternoon.
After cruising past Texas Tech's Jackson Cobb in straight sets in the round of 32 on Friday morning, Cressy took down top-seeded Logan Smith of USC, 6-4, 6-4, to advance to tomorrow's quarterfinals.ย Smith is currently ranked No. 48 in the Oracle ITA Division I Men's National Singles Preseason Rankings.
On the other side of the draw, sixth-seeded Austin Rapp downed Marcel Chan (Hawai'i), 6-4, 6-1, in his first-round match.ย The Bruin junior then squared off with Riley Smith (USC) in the round of 16.ย After dropping the first set 4-6, Rapp battled back to take the second, 6-1. ย It was neck and neck as the foes knotted the score at 5-5 in the third set.ย Smith went on to win the next two games, however, edging Rapp 7-5.
On Thursday, sophomore Daniel Gealer won two straight matches to qualify for the singles main draw.ย In the qualifying round of 64, Gealer coasted past UCSD's Edvin Larsson in straight sets.ย After taking the first set over Igor Kolaric (Hawai'i) 6-3 in the round of 32, the Bruin fell in the second set tiebreaker.ย The third set super tiebreaker went down to the wire, but Gealer outlasted his opponent 13-11 to punch his ticket to the main draw.
Gealer then fell in the main draw round of 32 to eighth-seeded Alex Sendegeya (Texas Tech) in straights on Friday afternoon.ย Sendegeya is currently ranked No. 83 in the Oracle ITA Preseason Singles Rankings.ย
Rounding out Friday's singles action for the Bruins, freshman Ben Goldberg fell to UCSB's Chase Masciorini in a tight two setter in the round of 32.ย
