Di Giulio Falls Short of ITA Main Draw

TULSA, Okla. โ Qualifying action has concluded at the 2016 Saint Francis Health System ITA Men's All-American Championships in Tulsa, and UCLA's Joseph Di Giulio fell just short of advancing into the main draw.ย On a five-match win streak, Di Giulio dropped his final-round match to Alex Keyser of Columbia.ย ย ย
In the first round of qualifying matches on Monday, Di Giulio registered a straight-set win over Texas' John Mee.ย The Bruin then squared off with Pac-12 foe Laurens Verboven of USC in the second round.ย The UCLA senior dropped the first set, 3-6, but battled back in the second-set tiebreaker to force a third.ย Di Giulio cruised to a 6-1 victory over Verboven to advance to the final round of qualification.
Di Giulio got off to a slow start against Keyser, dropping the first set 1-6.ย The Bruin held an early lead in the second, but Keyser battled back to gain a 6-5 advantage.ย Di Giulio rallied to force a tiebreaker, where he took the set 7-6(3).ย Unable to keep pace in the third, Di Giulio fell 1-6.ย ย ย
Main draw contests begin on Thursday, Oct. 6.ย The singles final is scheduled for October 10.ย Sophomore Martin Redlicki and senior Gage Brymer will represent the Bruins in the main draw.ย ย ย ย
Singles quarterfinalists, doubles finalists and consolation champions will receive an automatic entry into the 2016 USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships on Nov. 3-6, held at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, New York.

UCSB Classic
Staying closer to home this weekend, four Bruins head to Santa Barbara for the UCSB Classic.ย The tournament will be held Oct. 7-9 at the UCSB Rec Center Courts.ย ย Michael Guzman,ย Daniel Gealer, andย Maxime Cressyย will be joined by freshmanย Ben Goldberg.ย
