Pac-12 Leaders Face Off
Four of the Pac-12 leaders will face off this week as 10th-ranked UCLA and 7th-ranked USC host top-ranked Stanford and 14th-ranked California. UCLA hosts California on Thursday at 7pm and Stanford on Sunday at 1pm, while USC plays Stanford on Thursday and California on Sunday. All four teams, along with Colorado, are 3-0-0 in conference play.
Bruins Rolling on Six-Game Win Streak
UCLA has won six straight games since losing to North Carolina on Sept. 9, outscoring its opponents 14-4 during that streak. The Bruins did not have a winning streak longer than two games a year ago. UCLA's only two losses this season have come against teams ranked in the Top 10 - No. 6 Florida and No. 8 North Carolina.
Jenkins Out for Season
Senior forward Darian Jenkins had her season cut short on Oct. 2 at Oregon when she suffered a fibula fracture of her left lower leg in the second half of the Bruins' 3-2 win over the Ducks. Jenkins was having an outstanding senior campaign, scoring a then-Pac-12 best seven goals, 17 points and five game-winning goals. She had started in all 11 games and recorded her first career hat trick in the first half of the Bruins' season opener at San Diego State. Jenkins finishes her UCLA career with 29 goals, 12 assists and 70 points, along with 14 game-winning goals, which rank tied for fifth in UCLA history.
In the Rankings
UCLA returned to the Top 10 in the NSCAA poll for the first time since week four after spending three-straight weeks at No. 11. The Bruins also moved up one spot to No. 7 in the Soccer America poll and are also ranked seventh in the Top Drawer Soccer poll.
Pac-12 Leaders
UCLA leads the Pac-12 in points (76), assists (26), and assists per game (2.36) and ranks third in goals (25) and goals per game (2.27). Jessie Fleming leads the Pac-12 in points per game (1.88) and goals per game (0.88) and is tied for third in goals (7), along with Darian Jenkins. Anika Rodriguez is tied for the conference lead in assists (6) and assists per game (0.55). Jenkins is tied for the Pac-12 lead in game-winning goals with five. Teagan Micah is tied for second in shutouts (6) and shutouts per game (0.55).
One or the Other
In nine of 11 games overall this season, either Darian Jenkins or Jessie Fleming (or both) have scored at least one goal for the Bruins. Fleming had a four-game scoring streak from Aug. 28 to Sept. 11, and Jenkins had a three-game scoring streak from Sept. 11-18. The only two games in which either player did not score were the Bruins' 1-0 win at Texas A&M on Aug. 26 and the Oct. 2 3-2 win at Oregon.
Multiple Weapons
Even with Jessie Fleming and Darian Jenkins totaling 14 goals between them, there have been a total of nine Bruin players who have scored this season. Also seeing the back of the net have been two-goal scorer Amber Munerlyn and Gabbi Miranda and single-goal scorers Anika Rodriguez, Annie Alvarado, Gabrielle Matulich, Julia Hernandez, Claire Winter and Chloe Castaneda. Rodriguez has been the main provider for the Bruin goals with a Pac-12-high six assists. MacKenzie Cerda has contributed four assists to rank fifth in the Pac-12.
About the Bears
California has won five consecutive games en route to a 10-2-0 overall record. The Bears have gone 8-0-0 at home and 2-2-0 on the road. Arielle Ship, last season's Pac-12 Player of the Year, leads the Pac-12 in points with 19 (7g, 5a). Ifeoma Onumonu has added six goals. Goalkeeper Emily Boyd holds a 0.41 goals against average and has posted a conference-high eight shuouts.
About the Cardinal
Stanford will face USC on Thursday before playing the Bruins on Sunday. The Cardinal has just one blemish on its record, a 2-2 tie with Notre Dame on Sept. 11, and has won four straight. Three players are tied for the team lead in scoring with 12 points each - Jordan DiBiasi (6g, 0a), Megan Turner (5g, 2a) and Andi Sullivan (4g, 4a). Kyra Carusa is tied for the Pac-12 lead with six assists. Goalkeeper Jane Campbell, who will miss the USC game due to a red card, has a 0.70 goals against average this season. Stanford is coached by Paul Ratcliffe, who helped lead the UCLA men's soccer team to a NCAA title in 1990.
Last Time Out
Showing great resiliency throughout the contest, No. 11 UCLA earned a 3-2 victory at Oregon on Sunday. Claire Winter scored the game-winning goal in the 86th minute on a header off a MacKenzie Cerda corner kick. The Bruins got off to a slow start, allowing a goal in the third minute but tied it up in the 26th minute on an own goal. Gabbi Miranda gave UCLA its first lead in the 72nd minute on a free kick goal, and after Oregon tied the game in the 79th minute, Winter's goal provided the winning margin for the Bruins.
Bruin Strong
Four Bruins have logged over 900 of 1003 minutes of playing time in the team's 11 games this season. Goalkeeper Teagan Micah has played in all 1003 minutes, while defenders Zoey Goralski (930), Kaiya McCullough (924), and Hailie Mace (923) have each played over 900 minutes.
Fresh Faces
Only four players have started in all nine games this season, and three of them are freshmen - goalkeeper Teagan Micah, defender Kaiya McCullough and midfielder Anika Rodriguez. The fourth is sophomore Hailie Mace. Three other newcomers have earned starts this season - sophomore transfer Julia Hernandez, redshirt freshman Chloe Castaneda and freshmen Jacey Pederson and Sunny Dunphy.
Proctor Returns to Pitch
Sixth-year senior Courtney Proctor made her season debut on Sept. 16, playing five minutes at Pepperdine. She has gradually increased her production to 21 minutes against Long Beach State and 42 minutes against Arizona State. She had 27 minutes in each of the Bruins' two games in Oregon last week. Proctor began her career at UCLA in 2011, redshirted due to a torn ACL in 2012, played 24 games during UCLA's NCAA championship year in 2013 then played just six games in 2014 due to injury. She was granted a redshirt exception after the 2015 season and came back for her sixth season this year.
#LaurenStrong
The Bruins debuted new warmup shirts to support UCLA alumna Lauren Holiday, who was recently diagnosed with an operable brain tumor. UCLA's shirt has the hashtag #LaurenStrong on the front. On the back is her last name with the number 8, which she wore at UCLA.
Crosstown Showdown Moved to StubHub Center
The highly-anticipated Nov. 4 crosstown showdown between UCLA and USC has been moved from McAlister Field on the USC campus to the StubHub Center in Carson, Calif. The match will kick off at 7:00 pm and will be televised live on Pac-12 Network. Both UCLA (No. 11 ) and USC (No. 10) are currently ranked in the Top 11. The series between the two teams has averaged over 8,000 fans in the last two years, with an NCAA record 10,128 on hand at the Coliseum in 2014 to see the Bruins defeat the Trojans, 2-0, to capture the Pac-12 title outright.
Seven UCLA Alumnae Reach NWSL Championship Match
Seven UCLA women's soccer alumnae will be participating in the NWSL Championship on Sunday, including six starters from the Bruins' 2013 NCAA Championship squad. Defenders Caprice Dydasco and Megan Oyster are with the Washington Spirit, which finished second in the league with a 12-5-3 regular season record. Oyster started in 15 games, and Dydasco made 12 starts with two assists. The Spirit defeated the Chicago Red Stars in the semifinals, 2-1 in double overtime.
The Western New York Flash, which finished fourth in the league with a 9-6-5 record, have five Bruins on their 20-woman roster - Abby Dahlkemper, Sam Mewis, Katelyn Rowland, Taylor Smith and McCall Zerboni. Mewis was the Flash's third-leading goal scorer with four goals despite missing time with the U.S. National Team. Dahlkemper played every minute of every game and scored two goals. Smith played in 18 games and scored two goals. Zerboni had one assist in 12 games played. Goalkeeper Katelyn Rowland started six games and recorded a 1.33 goals against average. The Flash upset Shield winners Portland, 4-3 in double overtime in the semifinals, with Mewis recording a goal and an assist.
Looking Ahead
The Bruins will travel to Arizona for a Thursday, Oct. 13 contest in Tucson.
Alumni Weekend
UCLA Soccer will host a Fall Alumni Weekend for both men's and women's alumni on Oct. 20-23. The weekend activities include a ticket to the UCLA Football Homecoming game on Oct. 22, halftime recognition at the Oct. 23 games, a men's alumni game, a postgame clinic after the women's game, and a barbeque.
