Shibahara Advances Into ITA Main Draw

PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. – Bruin freshman Ena Shibahara secured her spot in the main draw at the 2016 Riviera/ITA Women's All-American Championships with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Michigan's Kate Fahey on Wednesday afternoon. Through pre-qualifying and qualifying action, Shibahara has not dropped a set in six matches.

In the first round of the qualifying draw, the freshman standout defeated No. 95 Viktoriya Dzyuba of Lipscomb, 6-1, 6-3. Shibahara then downed No. 31 Jessie Aney (North Carolina) in straight sets on Wednesday morning to advance to the final round.

Shibahara dictated the pace of the match, taking the first set 6-3 and jumping out to a 4-1 lead in the second set. Fahey battled back, however, holding at 5-3 to cut the deficit to one. The Bruin would serve for the match.

After being down 15-30, Shibahara traded points with Fahey to knot the score at deuce. The Bruin held on for the victory, punching her ticket into the main draw.

Main draw contests begin on Thursday, Oct. 6. The singles final is scheduled for Oct. 9. Main draw singles semifinalists, main draw doubles finalists, and main draw consolation champions will receive automatic entry into the 2016 USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships, Nov. 3-6 at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, New York.
