UCLA Comes Back to Tie California, 1-1
October 06, 2016 | Women's Soccer
Los Angeles, Calif. – Sixth-year senior Courtney Proctor scored the tying goal with less than a minute to play in regulation, allowing No. 10 UCLA to salvage a 1-1 tie against No. 14 California.
Proctor, starting in place of the injured Darian Jenkins, picked up not only her first goal of the season but her first goal since 2013. The team co-captain followed up on her own saved shot, volleying the rebound into the back of the net far post at 89:07.
"Tying it up that late was exciting, and it just shows that our girls are resilient, they never give up, and they keep fighting," said UCLA head coach Amanda Cromwell. "I think they had a little extra something for Darian tonight."
The Bruins (9-2-1, 3-0-1) nearly ended the game in the 105th minute on a shot by Jessie Fleming. Boyd stopped the shot, and the clearance found its way to Sunny Dunphy, whose header was saved by Boyd just two feet away from goal.
"I honestly thought Sunny was going to win it for us in overtime," Cromwell said. "I'm a bit bummed we didn't get the game-winner, but that's a quality team, and it was a very good soccer game."
The Golden Bears (10-2-1, 3-0-1) took the early lead in the 16th minute on a goal by Ifeoa Onumonu, who scored top shelf after receiving a ball back from Abigail Kim at the endline. Just prior to the Cal goal, the Bruins had been stopped twice by California goalkeeper Emily Boyd, who made a pair of tough saves on two Fleming shots. Fleming had five shots in the game, all saved by Boyd, who finished with 11 saves on 18 UCLA shots. Bruin goalkeeper Teagan Micah had five saves on 17 California shots.
UCLA will next face No. 1 Stanford on Sunday, Oct. 9 at 1pm. The match will take place at Drake Stadium. Tickets are on sale now at uclabruins.com/tickets.
