Men's VB Opens Weekend Tourney WIth Win Over CSUN

Bantle, Hatch and Hessenauer Help Lead MVB to Sweep in Opening Match.

John Speraw's men's volleyball team opened play on Friday evening in the annual Fall SAC Tournament with a sweep of CSUN. Scores of the exhibition match were 25-23, 25-19, 25-17. JT Hatch and Christian Hessenauer led the way for the Bruins with nine kills each. Daenan "Kofi" Gyimah added eight kills. Hessenauer also recorded three aces and Jackson Bantle had two service aces. In the night's other match, USC handed UC Santa Barbara a 3-1 defeat (26-24, 18-25, 25-19, 25-17). All four teams will be back in action on Saturday.

On Saturday at 9 a.m., UCLA will take on UC Santa Barbara while CSUN squares off against USC. In the 2 p.m. matches, UCLA will play USC and UCSB challenges CSUN. All matches will be played in the SAC (Student Activities Center) Gym on campus. Admission is free and limited seating is available.

The 2017 regular season begins on the road for the Bruins, who advanced to the NCAA semifinals a year ago, with matches at two-time national champion Loyola-Chicago on Jan. 3 and in the Pac-12/BigTen Challenge in Columbus, Ohio against Penn State on Friday, Jan. 6 and versus defending national champ Ohio State on Saturday, Jan. 7. A contest against UC Irvine on Thursday, Jan. 12 kicks off a 14-match home schedule for John Speraw's squad. It is the first of five straight home matches to start league play, with UC San Diego due in on Jan. 14, Cal Baptist on Jan. 18, USC on Jan. 20 and UC Santa Barbara on Jan. 25.
