WACO, Texasย --ย The ninth-ranked UCLA Bruins ran out of steam and fell at No. 2 Baylor 84-70ย in a battle of top 10 teams in Ferrell Center on Monday night. UCLA dropped to 1-1 while Baylor improved to 2-0.

The Bruins battled the Bears in the first quarter, trailing only 19-15 and thenย exploded for 33 points in the second period, the most scored by UCLA in any quarter in the last two years, to build a 48-41 lead at the break. In the record-setting quarter, UCLA made 5-of-6 from downtown and was 12-for-24 from the field.

Junior All-American Jordin Canada had a team-high 23 points and added six assists and four steals to lead UCLA. Junior Monique Billings had her second straight double-double to open the season with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Senior Kari Korver added 13 points on 4-for-8 shooting from three-point range.

The Bears scored the first eight points of the third period to take the lead. After that, they were met with little resistance, pounding the glass to the tune of a 52-25 advantage, leading to a 26-7 edge in second-chance points.

In the fourth quarter, Baylor used a 19-2 run to put the game away. Senior Nicole Kornetย made three consecutive free throws to cut it to 82-66 with 3:10 remaining, which was more points than UCLA could muster up to that point. She added two more free throws to provide the 84-70 final, finishing with nine points and three boards.

For the game, the Bruins forced 15 turnovers and only committed 10 miscues, but the rebounding disparity and poor shooting in the second-half were too much to overcome.

Kalani Brown had a monster game for Baylor with game-highs of 25 points, 19 rebounds, six assists and five blocks. Nina Davis, Alexis Prince and Alexis Jones each scored 15 points for the Bears.

The Bruins return to action on Friday, Nov. 18 at 7:00 p.m. when they host Southern University.
