UCLA Heads to Bay Area to Face Cal

November 21, 2016 | Football

LOS ANGELES – The UCLA (4-7, 2-6) football team will conclude the regular season on Saturday, Nov. 26 at California (4-7, 2-6). The game will kick off at 4 p.m. PT and be televised by ESPN2 with Mark Jones, Rod Gilmore and Quint Kessenich calling the action. The Bruin IMG Radio Network (Josh Lewin, Matt Stevens, Wayne Cook) will radio broadcast the contest on am570 or am1150. The contest will also be aired over Sirius/XM (internet 975), uclabruins.com and tunein.com, and the TuneIn App.

VERSUS CAL - UCLA leads the series with Cal by a 53-32-1 count. The winning team has scored at least 30 points in each of the last 12 meetings. The Bruins have won the last three encounters against Cal overall, but only once in Berkeley since a 28-16 win in 1998. That win came on the most recent trip up north in the 2014 season when the Bruins emerged on top in a 36-34 decision.  The 2014 win is the lone Bruin victory in the Bay Area in its last 11 games played in NorCal (2015 lost bowl to Nebraska, 2015 lost @Stanford, 2014 won @Cal, 2013 lost @Stanford, 2012 lost @Stanford in P12 Championship game, lost @Cal in 2012, lost @Stanford in 2011, lost to Illinois in bowl in 2011, lost @Cal in 2010, lost @Stanford in 2009, lost @Cal in 2008).

In that 2014 win at Cal, Marcus Rios intercepted a Jared Goff pass on the two-yard line with 51 seconds left to seal the victory. Brett Hundley threw for 330 yards and two scores, while adding another tally with a touchdown run, which helped UCLA end a seven-game losing skid at Cal. Three Bruin turnovers in the contest led to three short Golden Bear touchdown drives. Cal took a 34-33 lead with less than seven minutes left only to see UCLA answer with a 55-yard, eight play drive which produced the winning margin on a 26-yard Ka'imi Fairbairn field goal with 3:04 to play.

Last season, UCLA spotted Cal a field goal and then ripped off 23 straight points en route to a 26-10 halftime edge and a 40-24 win on a Thursday night in the Rose Bowl. The Bruins racked up 573 yards of offense (174 r, 399 p). Cal countered with 426 yards of offense (131r, 295 p). Josh Rosen threw for three scores while completing a then-school record 34 completions. The Bruin defense sacked Goff five times.

In the 2013 contest played in the Rose Bowl, UCLA shot out to a 17-0 lead. Cal closed to 24-10 at the half, but the Bruins defense blanked the Golden Bears during the second half in a 37-10 victory. Hundley, who recorded 13 straight completions during one stretch of the game, passed for a career-high 410 yards and three touchdowns.
