SANTA BARBARA, Calif. -- No. 9 UCLA scored the first six points of the game and never trailed, cruising to a 71-52 victory at UC Santa Barbara on Wednesday evening at The Thunderdome. UCLA improved to 13-2 all-time against UCSB and 5-1 on the Gauchos' home turf.
But it wasn't all smooth sailing as the Bruins (8-1) built a 20-7 lead at the end of the first quarter, only to see the Gauchos (2-7) come roaring back with a 16-2 run to tie it at 22-22 with 3:30 remaining in the second. UCLA scored just one field goal over a span of 8:05 and was outrebounded 13-8 in the second period. The Bruins led 33-26 at the break.
Jordin Canada had 14 points in the first half with Monique Billings right behind with nine. Sarah Porter led UCSB with 11 points on the strength of a 3-for-6 performance from beyond the arc.
Canada was simply too much for the Gauchos down the stretch and got easy penetration buckets whenever she wanted. She scored 13 points in the third period to put the Bruins up 50-40. She made her only three-pointer in the quarter and went 6-for-6 from the free throw line.
The Bruins ran away with it in the fourth quarter, extending their lead to over 20 with a 12-0 run to open the period. Canada finished with 30 points, the second time she has scored 30 or more points in her career, while Billings had 17 for the Bruins.
Kari Korver extended her consecutive games with a made three-pointer to 10 games, making the final basket of the game, a long-distance shot with 0:22 left. She finished with six points, five rebounds, four assists and three steals.
Porter was held scoreless in the second half and was the only Gaucho to score in double figures with 11 points.
