UCLA great Ato Boldon reflects on one of his most memorable moments on the track during his collegiate career. In 1996 in his last race as a Bruin, Boldon blistered the 100m straightaway in Eugene for a NCAA Championship meet record and world-leading time of 9.92.
Boldon still holds the school records in both the 100m (9.90) and 200m (19.80) sprints. In NCAA Outdoor competition, Boldon in 1995 won the 200m (20.24) and in 1996 won the 100m (9.92, meet record) and ran the second leg on UCLA's 4x100m relay that placed second.
At the Pac-10s, Boldon won four 100m (1995, 10.08; 1996, 10.03) and 200m (1995, 20.08; 1996, 20.00, conference record and UCLA Drake Stadium record) crowns. At the 1992 Seoul World Junior meet, Boldon won both the 100m (10.36) and 200m (20.63).
In Olympic competition, representing Trinidad/Tobago, Boldon won one Silver and three Bronze medals – 1996 Atlanta (third-place in the 100m and 200m), 2000 Sydney (second-place in the 100m, 9.99; third-place in the 200m, 20.20). At the Athens 2004 Olympics, Boldon ran in the 100m and on Trinidad's 4x100m relay (fifth-place). Only three other men in Olympic sprint history—Usain Bolt, Frankie Fredericks, and Carl Lewis—have won as many Olympic individual event sprint medals.
In 1997 Boldon won the World 200m crown, and in 1999 World rankings, he was No. 2 (9.86) in the 100m and No. 1 (19.88) in the 200m. During his professional career, he ranked in the Top 10 World rankings, seven times in the 100m and five times in the 200m. His PRs are 9.86 (100m) and 19.77 (200m).
Following his sprint career, Boldon has served as a Senator for Trinidad's main opposition party and many years has been a world track & field television broadcast announcer for NBC and ESPN.
In 2011 he was inducted into the UCLA Athletics Hall of Fame.
