No. 14 UCLA Defeats Washington State

LOS ANGELES -- Monique Billings had a game-high-tying 16 points and nine rebounds as No. 14 UCLA maintained its dominance over Washington State with a 73-61 victory over Washington State (12-12, 3-10 Pac-12) on Friday evening in Pauley Pavilion.

The game marked the 10th Annual Play4Kay Pink Game for UCLA to raise money and awareness for the Kay Yow Foundation and the UCLA Breast Center. Both the Bruins and the Cougars honored the tradition with a moving ceremony before starting introductions.

UCLA (18-6, 10-3 Pac-12) held an early 5-4 lead before engineering a 10-2 run to lead 15-6 after a layup by Billings (0:59). Washington State closed the quarter with two buckets to cut the lead to 16-10 by the end of the first.

The Bruins claimed their largest lead of the first half at 13 points (25-12) on a pair of free throws by Kelli Hayes with 7:11 to go in the second quarter. But the Cougars hit back-to-back threes and ended the period on a 15-6 run to trim their deficit to 31-27 at the break. Kari Korver led UCLA at halftime with eight points.

UCLA led by six (42-36) after a free throw by Korver (6:03). But the Cougars went on a 8-0 run, capped by a three-pointer from Pinelopi Pavlopoulou to lead 44-42 with 4:51 to go in the third period. UCLA scored the final five points in the last 49 seconds of the period to take a 56-51 lead into the fourth.

After WSU hit a three to open the scoring in the fourth, cutting the Bruins' lead to 56-54, UCLA went on a 13-0 run to build its largest lead of the contest at 15 points (69-54) with 4:37 remaining. Nirra Fields had five points in the run, including a huge three-pointer. The Cougars never got closer than 11 points the rest of the way.

Fields contributed 10 points, seven rebounds and five steals. Korver ended the night with 12 points while Jordin Canada rounded out a quartet of Bruins in double figures with 11 points. She also had eight assists, four rebounds and two steals.

Borislava Hristova led a trio of Cougars in double figures with 16 points. Taylor Edmondson had 12 points while Pavlopoulou added 10.

TIP-INS

Washington State: Committed 27 turnovers and fell to 0-29 all-time against the Bruins in Los Angeles. ... The Cougars were outrebounded 43-36 but shot 92.3 percent (12-for-13) from the charity stripe.

UCLA: Has been ranked for 11 straight weeks. ... The Bruins improved to 52-7 all-time against Washington State, winning 29 of the last 30 meetings. ... UCLA improved to 15-0 when leading at the half.

UCLA hosts Washington on Sunday, Feb. 14 at 11:00 a.m. PT/2:00 p.m. ET on ESPNU. The game is Girls Scouts Day as well as Dad's and Daughter's Day and the Bruins' annual Harry Potter game.
