#10 UCLA Drops Home Opener to UNC
February 20, 2016 | Baseball
LOS ANGELES – The UCLA Bruins were defeated by the North Carolina Tar Heels, 4-0, on opening night at Jackie Robinson Stadium in front of an opening night record crowd of 1,540 people. The Bruins were only able to garner five hits in the home loss.
Junior Grant Dyer (0-1) allowed four runs on seven hits over five innings to receive the loss. North Carolina's Zac Gallen (1-0) struck out 11 batters, allowing no runs on four hits to earn the win, while Hansen Butler came on to earn the save in the ninth.
Five different Bruins recorded a hit with Eric Filia leading the way offensively, adding two walks. Kort Peterson also got on base twice, posting a hit and a walk.
North Carolina (1-0) pushed across the game's first run in the top of the third to take the early lead on the Bruins. After Dyer recorded the first out of the inning, Cody Roberts and Brian Miller strung together back-to-back singles to put runners on the corners for the Tar Heels. Tyler Lynn then sent a deep fly ball to right field to sacrifice Roberts home and give North Carolina the one-run advantage.
UCLA (0-1) threatened in the bottom of the fourth when Filia and Kort Peterson teamed up for back-to-back two out singles, however Sean Bouchard couldn't bring them home and the Bruins remained behind.
The Tar Heels proceeded to stretch their lead in the top of the sixth with a two-RBI double from Brandon Riley and an RBI-double from Logan Warmoth to take a 4-0 lead.
The Bruins had another good chance to climb back into the game in the bottom of the seventh after Filia and Peterson drew walks to lead off the frame. UCLA couldn't cash in though as Sean Bouchard followed with a strikeout and Christoph Bono grounded into a double-play to end the inning.
Overall, the Bruins could not solve the Tar Heels pitching, striking out 14 times at the plate in the loss. However, the Bruin bullpen showed strong in relief of Dyer, combining to pitch four scoreless innings.
The Bruins and Tar Heels will be back at it tomorrow at 2:00pm PT at Jackie Robinson Stadium. Tickets are available and can be purchased by visiting uclabruins.com/tickets or by calling 310-UCLA-WIN. Fans can also listen live on uclabruins.com.
