CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. - Freshman Taylor Pack recorded an RBI double, sophomore Kylee Perez posted two hits and sophomore Johanna Grauer had a solid three innings of shutout relief, but the 10th-ranked Bruins came up one short in a 2-1 loss to #1 Florida on Thursday at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic II.
Sophomore Selina Ta'amilo (6-2) struck out a pair in four innings, giving up two runs, seven hits and four walks. In Grauer's three innings of relief, she fanned two and allowed two walks and two hits. The Bruins had seven hits from six different players, but also left eight on base.
After a 27-minute first inning in which both teams had three baserunners and left two on base, Florida got the game's first run in the top of the second on an RBI single by Kelsey Stewart. The Gators added their second run in the fourth on another two-out rally, as Amanda Lorenz recorded an RBI single.
The Bruins cut their deficit in half in the sixth, but also had a runner thrown out at home. Junior Delaney Spaulding led off with a single to right and sophomore Madeline Jelenicki followed with a single to left. After freshman Paige Halstead reached on a fielder's choice to force Jelenicki at second base, junior Robyn Corruth came in to run for Halstead. Pack followed with a double to right-center to score Spaulding. However, Corruth was thrown out at home to keep the score at 2-1, which would prove to be the final tally.
The Bruins play twice on Friday, starting at 12:30 p.m. against #8 Georgia and continuing 30 minutes after that versus BYU. Live stats and video will be available on UCLABruins.com.
