CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. - Senior Mysha Sataraka, junior Delaney Spaulding and sophomore Madeline Jelenicki all had two-hit games for the 10th-ranked Bruins on Saturday, but UCLA dropped an 11-7 decision to #11 Oklahoma at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic II.
UCLA had nine hits as a team, as Sataraka posted three runs batted in and freshman Zoe Shaw added two. Sophomore Johanna Grauer (3-3) struck out two in 1 1/3 innings, giving up six runs and seven hits. Sophomore Selina Ta'amilo fanned five in 5 2/3 frames of relief, allowing five runs, 11 hits and a walk.
The Bruins (9-5) batted around in the bottom of the first, scoring four times on two hits and four walks. Free passes to senior Allexis Bennett, sophomore Kylee Perez and junior Gabrielle Maurice on 13 pitches loaded the bases for Sataraka, who singled through the 5-6 hole to score Bennett to make it 1-0. One out later, Jelenicki singled to the same spot to drive home Perez with the Bruins' second run. A bases-loaded walk to Spaulding brought in Maurice to make it 3-0, which was followed by a sacrifice fly to left from Shaw to plate Sataraka with the Bruins' fourth run.
Oklahoma (10-4) rebounded with six in the top of the second. Lea Wodach led off with a home run, Whitney Montgomery had an RBI single, Nicole Pendley doubled home two runs and Sydney Romero belted a two-run homer. The Sooners would add two more in the fourth on a two-run single from Shay Knighten to make it 8-4.
In the bottom of the fourth, the Bruins got those two runs back. Freshman Imani Johnson and Bennett drew one-out walks, and one out later, Maurice drew a free pass to load the bases. Sataraka followed with a first-pitch single up the middle to drive home Johnson and Bennett to cut the deficit to 8-6.
Oklahoma added a run in the sixth on an RBI triple from Erin Miller to make it 9-6. A two-run single in the seventh by Kelsey Arnold extended the Sooners' lead to 11-6.
In the bottom of the seventh, Halstead led off with a double to center and was pinch-run for by junior Robyn Corruth, who scored two batters later on a double to right by Shaw to make it 11-7, but that would be the final score.
The Bruins conclude play this weekend at 9 a.m. on Sunday against Northwestern. Live stats and video will be available at UCLABruins.com.
