CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. - Freshman Zoe Shaw had a two-run double in the fourth inning to get the 10th-ranked Bruins on the board, but UCLA fell to Northwestern, 7-2, on Sunday to finish out the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic II.
The Bruins (9-6) had five hits for the game. In the circle, sophomore Johanna Grauer (3-4) started and struck out two in 5 2/3 innings, allowing six runs (three earned), 10 hits and one walk. Sophomore Selina Ta'amilo tossed 1 1/3 frames of relief, giving up an unearned run, a hit and a walk.
After two scoreless innings, Northwestern (7-7) got on the board in the top of the third on a two-run double from Andrea Filler. The Bruins rallied to tie the game in the bottom of the fourth. Junior Delaney Spaulding reached on a leadoff error and moved to third on a single through the 3-4 hole by junior Gabrielle Maurice. One out later, Maurice stole second and Shaw came up with the big hit, a double down the left-field line, to even things at two.
The Wildcats re-took the lead in the sixth with four runs on a run-scoring error by UCLA, an RBI grounder by Brooke Marquez, an RBI double from Morgan Nelson and a run-scoring single from Sabrina Rabin. Northwestern tacked on one more in the seventh on a sacrifice fly by Brianna LeBeau.
The Bruins open their home schedule on Wednesday against Michigan at 7 p.m. The game will be televised on Pac-12 Networks and will also feature live audio and live stats at UCLABruins.com.
