MVB Sweeps CUI For Sixth Straight Win

The No. 4-ranked UCLA men's volleyball team used a career-high 17 kills by Michael Fisher to sweep past Concordia on Friday night in a non-league match played in the Pauley Pavilion. Scores of the contest were 25-23, 25-21, 25-18. UCLA improved to 19-3 on the season, after registering its sixth straight win, and will take next week off for exams before returning to the court on Mar. 24 to meet CSUN.

In set one, Fisher came out strong and ripped six kills, many from the back row to help rally the Bruins. CUI broke a 6-all tie with a run to take a 7-11 lead. The Bruins came back to even the score at 13-all on one of four first-set kills by Christian Hessenauer. The score was tied at 17, 19 and 20. The Eagles went ahead 20-23 before the tough serve of Jackson Bantle down the stretch helped put the Bruins over the top 25-23. UCLA hit just .154 for the set.

In set two, UCLA jumped out to a 6-2 advantage after a Dylan Missry kill. Three more kills by Missry left UCLA in front 13-10. A kill by Oliver Martin broke a 14-all tie. The next three points went to the Bruins who used two kills by Fisher and a pair of aces by Hessenauer down the stretch to earn a 25-21 decision. UCLA's hitting percentage went up to .333 for the set.

In set three, UCLA opened up a 7-4 edge after a Fisher kill. The Bruins led 10-7 following a block by John Zappia, Micah Ma'a and Missry. Hessenauer's tough serve lifted the margin to 17-11. The Bruins went on to win the set 25-18 on Fisher's 17th kill of the night. UCLA hit .423 for the set.

Fisher hit .516 on 31 swings with six digs and three block assists. Hessenauer finished with a career-high tying four service aces and a season-best 11 kills. Ma'a added a couple of aces. Zappia finished with six total blocks. For the match, UCLA outhit the Eagles .283 to .105. It marked the eighth time in the last nine matches that the opponent hitting percentage has been below .200.
