PALO ALTO, Calif. -- The No. 25 UCLA women's tennis team dropped its first match of conference play when it fell 5-1 to No. 23 Stanford on Saturday afternoon. Due to rain in the forecast, the match kicked off with singles play and both teams decided to forego doubles.
The Bruins got off to a slow start, dropping five of six first sets. Freshman Alaina Miller took UCLA's lone first set on court 4, edging Stanford's Caroline Lampl in a first-set tiebreaker.
From there, Stanford registered three straight-set wins to take a 3-0 lead. Laura Luca and Kristin Wiley quickly fell on courts 6 and 5, respectively. On court 2, No. 55 Caroline Doyle overtook No. 96 Kyle McPhillips, 6-4, 6-4.
The deciding point came from court 3, where Terri Fleming fell in a hard-fought match to No. 88 Krista Hardebeck. After dropping the first set, 6-4, Fleming made a late push in the second, but it was not enough to overcome her Cardinal foe. With the win, Stanford clinched the match.
The remaining matches played out on courts 1 and 4. After dropping the first set, No. 19 Catherine Harrison battled back to force a third. In the final set, the Bruin senior cruised to a 6-1 victory to put UCLA on the board.
On court 4, Miller put up a good fight against Lampl. After Lampl forced a third set, the two battled back and forth. Miller was unable to outlast her opponent, however, and Stanford closed out singles play with a 5-1 lead.
Friday's match against top-ranked Cal was called due to rain. More updates on when that match will be rescheduled to come...
