#14 UCLA Drops Opener to Arizona

March 25, 2016 | Baseball

TUCSON, Ariz. – The No. 14 UCLA Bruins dropped the series opener to the Arizona Wildcats, 6-1, on Thursday evening at Hi Corbett Field. The loss ends the Bruins' five-game win streak.

Griffin Canning (3-2) got the loss for UCLA after allowing six runs on 10 hits over 6.2 innings of work. JC Cloney (3-1) threw a complete game for the Wildcats to earn the win, allowing just one run on six hits with seven strikeouts.

UCLA managed six hits, led by Sean Bouchard (2-for-4, 2B, R) who had a team-high two. Trent Chatterton (1-for-4, RBI) drove in the lone run for the Bruins.

UCLA (11-8, 3-1) scored first in tonight's contest, getting a run in the top of the second inning. Bouchard led off the frame with a double to right center and moved over to third on a sacrifice bunt. Then, Chatterton laced a single through the left side to plate Bouchard and put the Bruins up, 1-0.

However, Arizona (15-6, 2-2) responded immediately with a five-run bottom half to seize a four-run lead. The inning started innocent enough when the first batter reached after Bouchard couldn't get the ball out of the webbing of his glove on a hard-hit ground ball. The Wildcats then went on to rack up six hits and five runs in the inning and took a 5-1 lead after two.

Canning settled down and threw four consecutive scoreless innings after that point, but the Bruins were unable to cut into the deficit over that stretch.

Then in the seventh, the Wildcats extended their lead. Zach Gibbons delivered a two-out RBI-single through the right side to lift Arizona to a 6-1 advantage over the Bruins. That score would hold and the Wildcats would claim the five-run series opening win.

Game two between UCLA and Arizona will be tomorrow at 6:00pm PT at Hi Corbett Field. Fans can watch live via the Arizona Wildcats live stream or listen live at uclabruins.com.

Notes: Eric Filia has now reached base in all 19 games this season…Brett Urabe has reached base in 16 consecutive games…Sean Bouchard has recorded two hits in four of his last five games...Jon Olsen recorded his second consecutive scoreless outing...Griffin Canning allowed a career-high six runs...The loss is just the second all-time for UCLA when Canning takes the mound as a starter, going 15-2 in 17 starts.
