LOS ANGELES, Calif. – The No. 27 UCLA women's tennis team cruised to a 6-1 victory over No. 47 Washington State in its Pac-12 opener on Friday afternoon. With the win, the Bruins improve to 8-3 on the season and 1-0 in conference play.
The Bruins jumped out to an early lead, quickly securing the doubles point on courts 1 and 3. The fifth-ranked duo of Catherine Harrison and Kyle McPhillips rallied from being down 2-3 to win four straight games and take the set. A moment later, Alaina Miller and Kristin Wiley clinched the point for UCLA with a 6-2 win on court 3.
In singles play, the Bruins got off to a hot start, taking five of six first sets over the Cougars. No. 19 Harrison made quick work of Maria Biryukova on court 1, dispatching her opponent in straights to give UCLA a 2-0 advantage. McPhillips then extended the lead to 3-0 with a straight-set win over No. 119 Donika Bashota on court 2.
Freshman Alaina Miller sealed the deal for UCLA on court 3 when she edged Barbora Michalkova in a second-set tiebreaker. Both players traded game for game in the second set. Michalkova knotted it up at 6-6 to force the tiebreaker, but Miller came away with the win to give UCLA an insurmountable 4-0 lead.
The remaining matches played out on courts 4 through 6. After dropping the first set, Terri Fleming rallied to force a third. Fleming was unable to keep pace with Washington State's Trang Huynh, however, and fell 3-6 in the final set. Huynh registered what would be the Cougars' only point of the day.
To close out the match, Kristin Wiley notched a straight-set win over Aneta Miksovska on court 5. Kelly Shaffer followed suit on court 6 when she downed Victoria Matejevic, 7-6(6), 6-3, to put the Bruins up 6-1. The win was Shaffer's first of the season.
UCLA has a quick turnaround as it hosts No. 41 Washington on Saturday. The match takes place at noon at the Los Angeles Tennis Center.
