#14 UCLA Loses Slugfest at CSUN

March 09, 2016 | Baseball

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. – The No. 14 UCLA Bruins lost to the CSUN Matadors, 20-12, in a slugfest on Tuesday afternoon at Matador Field. The loss snaps the Bruins three-game win streak heading into today's game.

The Bruins racked up 16 hits, the second most this season, in the loss. Christoph Bono (2-for-5, 3B, R, 3 RBI) drove in a team-high three runs and Sean Bouchard (3-for-5, 2B, 2 R, 2 RBI) led the team with three hits to power the offensive attack.

UCLA starter Hunter Virant (0-2) got the loss, allowing nine runs (six earned) on five hits over 3.2 innings. Earning the win for CSUN was reliever Carter Yankie (1-0), despite allowing two runs in 0.2 innings.

CSUN (10-3) jumped all over the Bruins in the first inning, putting up seven runs in the opening frame. Branden Berry delivered a three-run home run to get the scoring started for the Matadors. Then, after adding two on a single and a fielder's choice, Fred Smith doubled to the right center gap to plate another pair and give CSUN the 7-0 lead.

UCLA (6-6) used a two-out rally in the third to cut the deficit to four. With two down and nobody on, Luke Persico and Kort Peterson drew walks to put two on for Bouchard. The Bruin first baseman then doubled to the corner in left to score two and was followed by Bono who singled to right to score another. The rally brought the Bruins back within four, 7-3, after three.

However, the Matadors regained their seven-run advantage in the bottom of the fourth. An RBI-single from Berry and a two-run home run from Albee Weiss got CSUN to double-digits and gave them a 10-3 lead over the Bruins.

The resilient UCLA side responded with four runs in the next inning to pull back within three runs. Peterson got the scoring going with an RBI-double to right-center to score Eric Filia from first. Then, following a Bouchard single, Bono laced a triple into the right-center gap to score two. Trent Chatterton then delivered Bono from third on a sac-fly and the Bruins were within three, 10-7.

The Bruins crept ever closer with another run in the sixth. With two out, Filia doubled and Persico singled to bring UCLA within two, 10-8. However, that would be as close as UCLA would get as CSUN would put the game away with another seven-run inning in the bottom of the sixth, eventually winning by the final count of 20-12.

UCLA now returns home to host the Texas Longhorns for a three-game series beginning on Friday, March 11 at 6:00pm PT. Tickets are available and can be purchased by visiting uclabruins.com/tickets or by calling 310-UCLA-WIN. Fans can also listen to all of the weekend's action live on uclabruins.com.

Notes: Brett Urabe extended his team-high hit streak to nine games…Eric Filia has reached base in all 12 games…Sean Bouchard tied a career-high with three hits…Zander Clarke and Jake Pries each recorded their first career hit…This was the most combined runs scored in a UCLA game since May 12, 2002 in an 18-14 win over Arizona…This was the first time UCLA had allowed 20 runs in a game since May 8, 2004 against Arizona.
